Almost twenty years …

So I just had a rather odd (crazy? dreadful? overwhelming?) realization at the Farmers’ Market today that I can – and do – answer most questions about my life with the phrase, “almost twenty years.”

How long ago did you meet/move in with/get engaged to your husband? About twenty years ago, coming up on our eighteenth wedding anniversary.

How long have you been seriously writing/writing full time? About twenty years.

How long have you been working with your editor? Oh geez … must be getting close to twenty years.

How long have you been knitting? Oh, well, I guess … about twenty years?

How long have you had cats? Almost twenty years.

How old is your turtle? Well … let’s see … she was 1 1/2 years old when we rescued her … so about twenty?

In other completely unrelated news, I’m turning forty-five on October 11.

Raindrops on blueberry bushes turning red for the autumn.

Happy first day of autumn!

My favourite time of year … when I’m not being obsessive about the passage of time.

  1. Happy Fall to you too. I have a booth at our Farmers Market and earlier in the summer the age realization really hit home with me. Now let me start by saying I do know how old I am but never really thought I am old (56 and I am NOT old) but we were talking to another vendor about age, marriage and kids and I mentioned my husband and I had just celebrated our 35th anniversary. Well there were some people with their children in our line and they said “Wow you have been married longer than I have been alive” . It became this big discussion on who was older than we have been married, no one was by the way. That day I did feel old.

Have a wonderful birthday, my husband turns 60 on October 13th, now thats old lol

    Love your books.

  2. I know how you feel, hubby and I met 19 years ago, and time seems to be measured in the occasional “before Scott” and everything else.

      1. It’s also crazy how often I paint him into the past. I’ll say, “You know when we went to this movie or that event.” “No,” he’ll say, “That must have happened before I met you.”

No way, everything happened together. Lol. (Despite us having survived much more than a quarter of a century without each other!)

  3. I turned forty-five on this past Thursday and, yep, just about everything is a “twenty years ago” answer. I had this same thought last week – great (or weird 😁) minds think alike, as they say.

  4. The only birthday I ever had any trouble getting through was my 25th … I know, I know, such an early milestone to obsess over. BUT, I was pregnant with my first child (daughter, but didn’t know that at the time), my birthday is April 14th, I am an Aries … ohhhh yeeeeeeeees … and just to give an idea on the pregnancy timeline, she was born 10 days late, after I had to be induced, on June 24th, SHE is a Cancer (big sigh).

But, the reason this birthday was such a horrible day for me, a customer I assisted decided it would be a good idea to point out that I wasn’t just turning 25, NO … I would be turning, A QUARTER OF A CENTURY OLD!! Now who in their right mind would ever say this to a woman, never mind a 7+ month pregnant woman … 😳🤯

  5. Fall is my favorite time of year…who doesn’t love the color change!?! Although in Southern California, we don’t see nearly enough of the change in seasons, seems all too often we go from summer to winter (for a day or two) and back to summer! I try not to think about age, but every year that becomes more difficult, the days pass faster and aches & pains seem to increase with each b-day (lol)…just celebrated 39 years with my dear hubby this past May, and will celebrate 59 years on October 2nd…I kind of wish I could say 20 years ago :-). So Happy Fall everyone, and to all those fellow Libras out there, Happy Birthday, and many more!!!

  6. I understand that thought. I was saying that a lot last year and I find I am saying it a lot this year… Next year I will find I will be saying over twenty years lol and I am 40. As for Fall/Autumn, I have no knowledge of this that you speak of as I have experienced once in, let’s say, about the last 20 years… I live in a desert where the bakes you until you are dead and then lightens to a slightly less hot that consists of you might need long sleeves, but you can roll with the sandals and be fine is you want to area 😉
