The length/price of a novel … a rant by MCD

So here is a great example of something I should keep my mouth shut about, but I’m going to waste my time responding to. Ironically, I was just talking about the grief I get for the perceived length of my books, and the pressure that negative (and erroneous) feedback puts on my ability to write those books.

So instead of writing new words, I’m going to respond to the latest accusation that I write NOVELLAS and charge FULL PRICE for them. Also the exact definition of a cliffhanger.

As you can see above, this reader is incredibly disgusted by my cliffhanging, novella-length books, which I have the audacity to charge full price for.

So let’s address these accusations.

First, a NOVELLA is 17,500 to 40,000 words in length. (here is the wiki link if you don’t believe me). The average length for an urban fantasy novel is 70,000 – 95,000 (Ilona Andrews often blogs about needing to REDUCE their word count for traditional publishing).

Here are the WORD COUNTS for my FULL-LENGTH books (yes, I’m seriously wasting my time now)(in reading order):

• Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1) – 68,000

• Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic (Dowser 2) – 82,061

• Treasures, Demons, and Other Black Magic (Dowser 3) – 85,621

• I See Me (Oracle 1) – 72,483

• Shadows, Maps, and Other Ancient Magic (Dowser 4) – 68,538

• Maps, Artifacts, and Other Arcane Magic (Dowser 5) – 73,782

• I See You (Oracle 2) – 77,029

• Artifacts, Dragons, and Other Lethal Magic (Dowser 6) – 90,548

• I See Us (Oracle 3) – 84,862

• Catching Echoes (Reconstructionist 1) – 69,739

• Tangled Echoes (Reconstructionist 2) – 75,994

• Unleashing Echoes (Reconstructionist 3) – 77,016

• Champagne, Misfits, and Other Shady Magic (Dowser 7) – 74,500

• Misfits, Gemstones, and Other Shattered Magic (Dowser 8) – 73,550

• Gemstones, Elves, and Other Insidious Magic (Dowser 9) – 91,443

• Demons and DNA (Amplifier 1) – 76,984

• Bonds and Broken Dreams (Amplifier 2) – 92,296

• Mystics and Mental Blocks (Amplifier 3) – 83,640

• Idols and Enemies (Amplifier 4) – 103,026 (also includes The Music Box – an extra 4500 words at no extra cost to the reader).

• Misplaced Souls (Misfits 1) – 91,661

• Invoking Infinity (Archivist 1) – 106,557

• Compelling Infinity (Archivist 2) – 88,680

As you can see NOT ONE of the books I charge so-called full price for is a novella. Nowhere near, in fact. The first book in a trilogy is often a little trimmer (Dowser 1, Dowser 4, Oracle 1, Reconstructionist 1, and Dowser 7) because it is the ‘first act’ aka the set-up. And is often balanced by a much longer third book (Dowser 3, 6, and 9, etc)

PRICING

Dowser 1 is FREE. Dowser 2 and 3, Oracle 1 are $3.99. All my other full-length books are $4.99.

The average price for an urban fantasy novel? (eBook, USD): $3.99-$16.99, but most indies charge $4.99-$6.99.

And, highly ironically, the two books I call novellas, The Amplifier Protocol (Amplifier 0) and Awakening Infinity (Archivist 0) are actually short novel-length but I charge $3.99 for them. I also gave away Amplifier 0 and Archivist 0 for free on my blog (serialized). And, at one time or another, the Dowser box set (three books), Oracle 1, and Reconstructionist 1 have all been available for free.

And, even more ironically, my cost to produce a novel (not including an audiobook which adds $3500-$4000) has tripled in the last two to three years and I HAVEN’T RAISED MY PRICES. It costs me (depending on what cover artist I use or extras I include, like the illustrations in the Archivist series): $5k- $7k to produce the eBook and paperback. Minimum. To be completely transparent, I earn approx $3.70 on a $4.99 book. So … just to put it all together, I have to sell 1350 – 1890 eBooks just to break even.

CLIFFHANGERS (Wiki link)

None of my books end in an actual cliffhanger – as in the story abruptly stopping with no resolution, aka with the main character literally hanging off a cliff by their fingernails. Teasing where the story goes next IS NOT A CLIFFHANGER. Even in DOWSER 8, the main storyline is resolved. It just isn’t resolved to some readers’ satisfaction. The second book in a trilogy (so Dowser 2, Dowser 5, Dowser 8, Oracle 2, Reconstructionist 2) traditionally ends on a low note – that is the PROPER structure for a trilogy!! And even then, in my books, the main storyline is ALWAYS resolved. Hence no actual cliffhangers.

It is highly ironic, that the hate mail I got after Dowser 8 directly contributed to me not writing any more Dowser books, and no longer writing trilogies even though I love the structure. Nasty notes/reviews/etc took Jade away from me, and I will be forever bitter about it. Which is probably why I just wasted my time writing this blog post.

So … I hope whoever decided to write the nasty review accusing me of charging novel prices for novellas and ending all my books with cliffhangers is happy she got my attention. That she got me angry. And that instead of writing new words, and therefore releasing another novel sooner than later, that I wasted my time writing this blog post. I hope she also enjoyed getting (at minimum) Dowser 1 for free.

I hope she enjoys the fact that she has most likely galvanized me to raise my prices (since my own costs have more than tripled).

But one question? If you are so DISGUSTED by paying for my so-called ‘cliffhanger’ ‘novellas’, why keep reading them?

Yes, I know, I shouldn’t read reviews, but when I’ve just released a book I often pop over to see how it is being received. This was staring me in the face when I did so this morning.

End Rant.

Lunch.

And then, I will attempt to get some new words written.

    1. “Some people bitch if their ice cream is cold” – I’ve never heard that saying and I LOVE it. *laughing face*

  1. I hope that someday you feel you can revisit Jade – I miss her and her crew. This one person’s ridiculous review is wrong and your books are worth every penny. It is a sweet price for a little dream time. My only wish for your writing – more Kett!

    1. Oh Kett- insert wistful sigh here!!- me too! It’s been a little while since I’ve re-reread some of the series but I may have to go back and revisit! Loved Kett!

    2. Her blog infuriates me …l loved the Dowser series and had wondered why there was not to be anymore. I would have been thrilled for them to continue. It is one thing to give constructive feedback or reviews Pricing has always been fair and with pricing going up all around us you have been exceedingly fair. As you said if the price was too much as she said ,why did she continue to buy them. Don’t let those negative reviews get you down. I have just finished your latest release compelling infinity am now waiting for the next one in the series. If you did raise your prices I would understand and it would not change my intent to purchase them although l would hope it not be due to the negative Nancy’s in the world.. You are a wonderful author and wish you great continued success.

    3. You shouldn’t feel you have to justify your creativity to anyone if they don’t want to buy the book then they don’t have to, the rest of us love them. Thank you for sharing your talent

    4. I am with you on the desire for her to revisit Jade. I miss her her and wonder how she’s dealing with married life.

    5. That is utter nonsense. It’s like people bitching about what’s on tv. I say change the freaking channel if you don’t like it! I was wondering why Jade stories went away. I miss her too. I am glad to pay your very reasonable prices for your wonderful books. I’ve bought every one of them as soon as I saw they were available. And I don’t mind paying you for your hard work. I only wish I was capable of writing like you do. During my IT decades I wrote many user manuals and stuff like that. I know how.much is involved in THAT. This has to be exponentially more, as the audience is wider. Don’t let the whiners hamper you! They are not required to buy. If it bothers them so, and they did buy without checking the page or word length – one of which is always available before buying – then they screwed up and need to put on their big girl panties and suck it up.

  2. I would pay whatever price you sold your books for. It’s a damn shame that A-holes took Jade away from you and all of us. Eff those whiney, entitled people anyway.

  3. I hope you feel better getting that off your chest. I’m not sure if that person will ever hear the depth of how her thoughts impacted you. However, I sincerely hope that you realize there are more people who support you and appreciate your gift then there are negative ones. Treat yourself to one of your delicious chocolate creations, I know I would if I was able too. Hope your day gets better.

  4. What’s really sad is that she probably paid 3 times of your price for a different author! While I may wish your books are longer, it SOLELY because I’m not ready for it to end and not because the book is too short. I know when I have a MCD book I will get more than my money’s worth. If she’s so unhappy, she should get it through her library

    1. I agree! I too am saddened when they end because I know there’s going to be a bit of a wait for the next adventure and I wasn’t ready to be done- but that’s just ME! There’s nothing actually wrong with the length of book or the storyline!! (Sorry, I think I said the same thing you already did, lol!)
MCD, I hope you can see all the people who are upset about that comment as well and who live your writing and giveaways!
      ❤️

  5. I certainly understand your frustration. Ugly comments can eat away at our souls. It hurts to know that these reviewers are stealing your joy and dampening your enthusiasm for those characters and books you love. Their ugliness says more about them than any perceived grievance they may have. My response to them, “Buck Up, Buttercup”! Keep doing you, Meghan! Raising prices will not stop most of us from continuing to enjoy your talent and our love for your characters and our friends!❤️❤️❤️

  6. I can feel the heat all the way out here in Colorado! As my dear Father once said “the world is full of A**-holes”. For my part: I enjoy your writing and pay what you ask for your work AS A PROFESSIONAL. You don’t do this for free anymore than I develop software for free. I believe I have read all of of your books to date and can say with conviction that I am happy to purchase and read whatever you see fit to create!

  7. It’s probably pointless to say don’t let that person get to you, since your justifiably, fizzing mad, but that wasn’t a review of your fantastic book that was a bitchy moan. And if she has read all your books, then she SHOULD KNOW the layout and the way you write. I have bought all your books (except those free ones I gleefully grabbed.. thank you!) and thoroughly enjoyed them. I’ve re-read them umpteen times I’ve loved them that much. In fact I’ve read Compelling Infinity twice and loved it that much I’ve went back to awakening infinity to work my way though again. Kellyann, the octopus and sparkle.. need I say more!! And I’m gutted that some shitty readers made you stop writing stories about Jade & Co.. hopefully you’ll get back to her again in the future. Til then keep writing your fantastic NOVELS and don’t let them get to you. Much thanks and love

  8. I’m a new fan and have read everything up to Amplifier 2 and love them so much. I can’t imagine how awful it must have felt to read such a rude review but I’m 100% sure that for every one nasty person, there are hundreds of us who will lovingly pay to read your amazing novels. I would love to read more Jade. If nasty reviews took her away just let us adoring fans know what you need to return to her.

  9. Honestly, I don’t know what that person is going through in their life but it’s clearly not great. Your novels are amazing and we all appreciate them. Thank you for keeping your prices affordable! I hope you get an outpouring of folks who agree with what I’m saying. Hope your lunch is yummy! 🤓

  10. I will have to go back to D8 to see what in the world anyone could hate on. That’s just unbelievable. And your books are CHEAP… seriously cheap! And I mean that only in what the price is… not the quality, because they are printed to a very high quality, and the ebooks have none of the hurdles I’ve experienced with others. I know everyone is crabby these days, but good Heavens, these are petty, petty gripes.

  11. This hurts my heart because you, Meghan, have such a large loving fan base. We love you for you and all your characters as family. It’s hard to ignore the negativity especially when it is unfounded. Unfortunately, today’s world is full of people that are miserable in themselves and therefore want to spread it around. Don’t let them steal your Joy! Hold on to the love the majority of us have for you and flick those pesky haters away like flies.

  12. I will continue to support and buy your books no matter what! It’s crazy because some kindle books ar $9.99/$10.99 and we don’t bat an eye about these popular names in books now do we? But $4.99 is sooooo steep and disgusting that we have to complain but still read? I hate it here! Calgon take me away please (hope u know that reference lol) but these reviews are ridiculous and that’s me filtering my language! Nothing in a book is going to make u 100 percent happy! I don’t even want to read a book if I’m not feeling all the feels and not just super happy about everything and the storyline being predictable and going my way! You can’t please everyon but we love you and as i said I’m always support and honestly you really should stop cheating yourself and charge what your worth! I know writing to some is a passion and a lot of you don’t focus on the money solely but it’s still an income to a lot and it takes your time and money! I been reading with you since day 1 and it’s about time you charge more! I’m so sorry about the Jade thing because i love Jade she’s why i fell in love with your books in the first place among other characters of course like Kett and Wysteria. I wish we had more dowser and the haters would shut up and leave well enough alone! I say you do what you want unapologetically as long as you don’t land in jail Lmaoooo! Much love Megan to you and Jade Godfrey and the adept universe i hope that will go on forever ❤️❤️❤️

    1. Oh and i literally bought every book u wrote that’s available besides the novellas u offered free in the kindle versions and i have all the audiobooks on audible! Keep taking my money because it’s all worth it!

  13. I am so sorry that this reader has been so mean and disrespectful. You are, by far, one of my top 3 favorite writers. Not only that, but you are THE ONLY writer I know that does so many extra things for her readers. You do so many giveaways, and only charge the bare minimum for your books. The world you have created has been an escape for me, and I’m forever grateful for that. I will share in your anger about the whole Dowser thing, though, because I wish there were AT LEAST 3 more Dowser books. I fell in love with the Adept Universe because of Jade.
Just remember that for every hateful person, there are a handful more that love everything you do and write. You’re an inspiration to me, and I only wish I had even half the talent you do!

  14. Wow!! I am so sorry you cop this kind of crap!
    Me personally?
I can see how many pages there are in a book if I’m truly interested in getting “value for money” before I buy.
I make a choice to read a book. Sure, sometimes I realise that a book just isn’t what I expected but I move on. That’s my choice.

At the end of the day, I’m reading to be entertained, and immersed in another world.
Your books give me that experience. Your novellas provide “fillers” before, between and beyond the main events, filling in the blanks and giving me a more rounded view of your worlds. And they almost always make me re-read your books with a new perspective. That’s what I’m paying for❤️

  15. Your books are very reasonably priced for the entertainment provided. When a book reaches the end I always want more, not because of a cliffhanger but because the characters have become like family. I want to be a part of their world as long as possible. Please don’t give these whiners the time of day. They don’t deserve a second of your time. If it fits your plan I would love to revisit Jade and Kett!

  16. As someone whose job is in Customer Service, there are some people that just live to gripe. It’s not really worth your time or breath. But I appreciate the education on the publishing terms and how they are defined 🙂

I’ve enjoyed all of your books, even when they make me cry or grumpy. Please don’t let these Negative Noodles bring you down..

  17. You keep writing, we will keep reading and buying, happily , some people just have to grouse about every little thing. Thanks for being you !

  18. I’m so sorry you have to deal with these people. I thoroughly enjoy your books and would pay whatever you want to charge to read them. I do not have the TALENT you have for the worlds you allow us to live in, so THANK YOU for pushing through and continuing to share with us ♥️♥️

  19. It makes me so sad that someone can ruin such a wonderful experience for you & all of us – your true fans.
I will pay whatever price you charge to continue to read your stories.
I’m sorry for the negativity you have to face when you put yourself out there…it’s a shame!
I hope you always find it worthwhile in the end and continue to share with us.

  20. I personally was shocked the way Dowser 8 ended, and asked why no one warned me on the spoilers group, but that’s because your books are so amazing that I was jokingly angry that I had to stay up and jump right into Dowser 9. I am more broken hearted about this blog post because I just learned that Jade is no more and I will not be getting anymore Dowser books. I’m destroyed by this news and will have to go mourn the loss of my favorite world, my book besties, and pray that you’ll forgive the haters enough to bring your fans back to the Adept universe. I think you could probably get your fans to donate to a fund to help you publish more Dowser books, even if you dno’t need it.

On the note of haters, sick your fans on them, we would happily kick their ass.

Love you and so glad that I found you and your books.

    1. The Dowser series is only one part of the Adept Universe. I’m still writing Amplifier, Archivist, and the Misfits, which are all set in the Adept Universe. And writing books isn’t about the money (so no need for donations) it’s about the story and the muse. Too much negativity dampens my creativity. I fight it, of course. I lock myself away and don’t interact. But sometime it comes at me unexpectedly, like today.

      1. I didn’t realize Dowser stopped bc of all the negativity (if I understood your post) because I thought it ended really well. Jade can be happily married, and I’m more than happy to read all these great new stories in the Adept universe. I honestly think the stories get better and better; it’s this great interconnected world. Like how Dusk is posing as a Godfrey witch (and each series becomes my new favorite!).
I hate that you have to read these frustrating comments. From the perspective of a reader who uses comments (especially 3 star ones bc usually they give pros and cons), the cliffhanger comments piss me off. I don’t know why folks think a series won’t leave some issues unresolved in each book. How can you have a series if every question is answered?!? While there are legit cliffhanger books, they almost always say so in their description. (and If that comment were not repeated, i’d ignore it as a crazy post). Also as a reader using reviews, the price comment wouldn’t turn me off from a book and I would ignore it; I think the effort that goes into art is often undervalued and underappreciated bc there are a lot of selfish idiots out there. So if it helps calm your anger/frustration at all, know that those of us that use reviews see past this person’s review as crazy talk (while I’ve read dowser, I think I could see this person as crazy anyway. How’d they get to book 8 anyway lol)

  21. So sorry you had this experience. Unfortunately haters pop out of the woodwork when you put yourself out there. I am like the majority of your fans. Whenever I know you have a new book coming out I pre-order it so it will magically appear on my kindle on release day. I love your books, read them in one sitting (often way into the middle of the night). Then I’m sad when I get to the end. The sentiment is always more please. Your stories are so engaging, I am blown away by your creativity. Was wondering what happened to Jade. She is a kickass heroine, I hope one day you will bring her back. You have no idea how losing myself in one of your books brings me out of whatever problems are happening in my life at the time. Maybe you should ask a friend to read the reviews for you.🙂

  22. Keep writing your stories the way you choose. I’ll keeping reading them. I have never complained about the price of any book I’ve read especially if it’s by an author I like. Your stories, your choice.

  23. I hope some of your frustration was being hangry and lunch helped some.
You do know that so many of us enjoy and treasure your stories and want to send you hugs.
I’ve always been suprised at how low the price of your books are for Nook.

  24. I am sorry that you felt the need to explain anything. I guess it’s a sign of the times that people think they have to complain about everything.
I am grateful for every book that you create and look forward to reading each one. My family and friends and my neighbors all enjoy the fruits of my labor baking your recipes.
Thank you and please stay healthy.

  25. I’m so sad right at this moment reading how hurt and angry you are because of insensitive twats like the person who left that disgusting review.
I love your books and always buy them because I know they are going to be great. You are one of my automatic always buy new release authors. I would be very happy to pay a few dollars more for your stories when you put your prices up. Also tears of dismay because this is the reason Jade has gone!!! I love Jade she is my absolute favourite character of yours.
Now I feel bad because I don’t leave reviews because I never know what to say. I’ll try do better. Much love from a big fan in Australia

  26. Meghan, You’re books are so good that I think that person read it in one sitting and didn’t notice the sun had set and risen again. When I stumbled onto one of your wonderful books, I immediately bought your entire backlist. Now I snap them up as you churn them out (and props to you being able to write with your headaches…I would be curled in the fetal position unable to write my own name) and savor each word. Each new release goes to the first spot on my extensive TBR pile. Compelling Infinity brought tears to my eyes and I am a jaded, hardened woman in her sixties. Who is very picky about what she reads (so many books…so little time). Your books are not novellas. Your books are affordably priced. I am upset that you even took the time to needlessly defend yourself. But, I understand. So soak in all these pretty reponses that are outraged for you. We love you and every word you write.

  27. Hi Meghan. I dont blame you for taking offence at that comment. There’s always some small minded person to suck the joy out of anything. Please don’t let them get you down!
I’ve read pretty much all your books (apart from a few of your young adult, early ones), and have thoroughly enjoyed them! I had wondered why Jade didn’t feature any more, but now understand – I’m so terribly sad that hate mail left you feeling like that. However, it was lovely to see Pearl, Drake & the Guardians again! I love Dusk, Sisu & Kellan, together with personality of Wilding Manor.
Your creativity and talent for storytelling is a gift and I’m so thankful for you.
Sending you hugs and love. K xx

  28. Since I’m one of your biggest fans, of course I’m going to come to your defense, but thats not why I am in this instance. I read, (a LOT). I therefore pay, a lot for it. That’s MY hobby, if you will. I know the prices charged by a lot of authors out there – and you should be seriously charging more for your full length novels. I would pay it, and I know a lot more people would as well. When I pay $14.99 (US) for a new novel by a favorite author AND still pay for an Amazon Prime subscription, it’s because I want to hear the stories they’re telling. I don’t bat an eye about the price. If someone has a problem with that, they can just not buy it.

Our (horrid) culture right now that makes people think they can so carelessly criticize on any social platform is the most thoughtless and inherently wrong thing with our world today. There will always be that ONE person who ruins it for all others, and that makes me sad. I’m glad you got that off your chest and hope that your next book (regardless of length) has that person’s name as your villain HA! Not at all trying to diminish your being mad with a joke though. Just know, you have way more fans for life than one immature keyboard warrior without a thought for anyone but themselves.

  29. Rather than comment on the actual comment that triggered your rant, I want to say I found your information interesting. Personally, I did not know all the little details that go into getting a book on the shelf! So thank you for that. Also, I feel like the novellas are just more history to a storyline. So it’s the reader’s discretion to take (or pay) for that information, if they don’t like the price, don’t purchase it, they won’t lose the storyline without it in my opinion, but for us readers that crave that history, they’re awesome! Of course, you know what they say about opinions! 😉

  30. Ah, man! That sucks. I don’t feel you wasted time. I am honoured to read your rant. Raise your prices, Lady! Discount codes for your most avid/supportive readers.
You DESERVED to be compensated for your 1) amazing writing, 2) PERFECT LENGTH BOOK! (Especially in this day and age) 3) How amazing your are to your readers! You personalize their reading experiences and are available to them. You absolutely rock! It has been a tough time on all of us these past couples of years, even more for you with your headaches, and yet you keep producing…FOR US!!! And each one better then the last.
You are a wonderful woman with an amazing heart.
Let that be staring you in the face each morning!
    Xoxoxoxoxox

  31. I fear I was one of those who over-reacted at the ending of Dowser 8. I was so torn up by what the evil elves did to our powerful Jade i immediately went to WTF mode. I certainly would never have responded so badly if I had imagined you would be hurt by it. I still hold out hope for a cameo in Archivist and Amplifier. I gobble your work and will continue to do so at any price!!!

  32. That is the craziest thing I’ve heard. You shouldn’t have to justify yourself for the price of your novels. I don’t care what the prices are. You aren’t writing these stories as a favor to the public. This is your work (albeit very talented work) and you should be paid accordingly. Some people are so cheap and thoughtless and should just pull the heads’ from their posteriors. And don’t get me started on your giveaways. You give so much to your fans, and not just in product, but in your very precious time. Please don’t give these sorts of people too much thought, because I can tell you that if they thought at all about what was being said … it wouldn’t be said.

  33. This just makes me want to buy more of your awesome T-shirts (in addition to multiple formats of all of your books).

Jade is an absolutely beautiful shining star, but as all muses can be, she is elusive…

Good thing, your entire Adept Universe is FULL of bright and unique and equally as mesmerizing stars.

Just keep working your own magic, MCD, it is as special as your characters’ 💖

  34. I buy every book you write – and I never look at the price. I have paid far more for books I did not enjoy nearly as much.

Please accept our support and love and appreciation and let everything else go.

Ps. Maybe they seem short because they are so good and we always want more!

Pps. I’d love to have Jade back in my life. I’m re- reading from start and am up to Dowser 8.

  35. You are welcome to your rant and I hope you feel better releasing it, but remember now all of us that love your books and fully support you. I do miss Jade but Dusk is wonderful and I like the connection. So funny that you mentioned cliff hangers because at one point near the end something very risky happened, and I was afraid to turn the page and see The End. But I said to myself Meghan would never do that to us, and I was right- the story continued! Thank you for all that you do!

  36. I am seriously unhappy with the person who criticized your work/prices etc. I LOVE your books/characters/plots and always look forward to the next book to further flesh out the characters as well as providing me a story transporting me to that world. I have never felt they were overpriced or the wrong length or cliffhangers! I am angry and so sad
that she took Jade from you because she took Jade from all of us. I have mentioned before I have read all of your books twice and look forward to a further reread in the future. I am one of your readers that have real hope that Jade’s story will continue at some future date but I well understand your rant. I have been so pleased to see guardian dragons and Drake in Dusk’s world. I look forward to reading your future books at whatever price you need to charge. Count me as a forever fan (72 and still truckin).

  37. I truly do not understand people who would post such a negative review! I love all of your books – and have purchased them all. I started buying the Kindle version, but now am purchasing them all in paperback (as I love books!!) I love your series so much that I go back and start with the 1st book in the series and reread them in order before I start a new release! I’ve been known to read through the night just to finish. Please ignore those nasty reviews and continue on with what you’re doing!! But if by chance you bring Jade and cohorts back – I would be ecstatic!! Take care!!

  38. I find you books to be great stories. If I remember correctly you left Jade in a dungeon over 2 books, but as you said trilogies often have unresolved portions. Your Ebooks have great pricing. I certainly didn’t have to pay $12-18 as I occasionally have to do with a mainstream publishing house author. Please keep them coming!

  39. what the hell, I have enjoyed everyone of your books. it is not the cost of your books that gets to me, it is having to wait for the next one to come out. I have paid for all of my books bewteen 2.99 to 9.99 a book. it is not how long a book is to me it has taken me to a new world, if I have seen new places and meet new people. that is what a good writer can do for you. Meghan that is what only a few writter can do for me and you are the top of my list. Not only do I get all of your new stories but I re-read them all again. you cannot please everyone so do not try. but for those of us you do please you really do a good job.
    Wynette

  40. Your rant was totally justifiable and I am glad you gave your readers a touch of reality about the cost of publishing. You go way beyond what many other authors do for their fan base. I miss Jade and the cupcakes and hope they make a cameo appearance in a future book. I love the whole universe especially the Amplifier and the Archivist. I can really relate to the archivist since I was one and remember when I held a document in my hand signed by George Washington and turn the page in a Gutenberg bible. So keep doing what your doing and CHARGE MORE. You’re not a novice author anymore, you can charge what your worth

  41. I want to also say, raise your rates. I enjoy your work so much not only do I buy the ebooks I’m also slowly acquiring physical copies. It’s good work, I want to support it. I want to help there be more of it all! If only we could crowdsource you back into the Soul series….lol

  42. I don’t understand people… why leave a review like that? You are an amazing writer and you do not deserve to have people write things like that about you just because they want a longer story. I loved reading tge trilogies and am so sad people would get mad at you for the way you wrote them (so perfectly, if you ask me!) and that it stopped you from wanting to continue Jade’s story. Hopefully one day people will learn to appreciate stories for what they are and feel the need to find some negative. Keep being you, you are awesome. All the best, and I hope you will be able to forget about this review and all other negative ones sometime soon, as hard as that will be.

  43. I will happily pay whatever you charge for your books! I just love diving into the world that you have created and I look forward to every story!

  44. I don’t see how she can say you are her favorite author and say something like that . I always wish your books are longer but that’s only because I love them so much . I feel like your prices are an excellent deal. Keep doing what you are doing , we love you and your writing !!

  45. Meghan, I love your work! All of it and thank you for sharing your talent with us. I can honestly say that I often wish your books were longer, but that is because I want more! Definitely no dissatisfaction… ALL your books are well loved and re- read many, many times.

  46. That is just so rude! I think most of us who love your stories would agree that your novels are excellent and exactly the length they need to be. I know I would love more words, but who wouldn’t? I also know that it’s not feasible. I have not felt your books leave us hanging, I think that person read too fast and didn’t savor the book as well as maybe skipped something bec she’s completely wrong.
I also feel sad that people’s negativity ruined Jade, I can relate to that, don’t bother with the negative comments or people; we your true fans are here for you and love you!

  47. The reason your books seem so short is because you can’t put them down once once you start reading! Some people are never happy don’t let them ruin your day.

  48. I didn’t read everyone else’s comment, but let me share mine. I feel grateful that you publish more than one book a year. I feel grateful that your books are so much less expensive than other publishers. And I am THRILLED with your writing style and the fact that you have so many story lines going at once and keep them straight. I imagine you as a juggler of very difficult things… maybe bowling balls… and doing it looking effortless. Illegitimi non carborundum!

  49. I’m now PISSED that people like this took Jade away, what in the actual F?! I can’t imagine dealing with the public and I’m sorry you have to. I will continue to give you ALL MY MONEY FOR ALL YOUR BOOKS, whatever you charge. I hope your day got a little better and I’m sure there are more of us that need more from you than dumbasses like that.

  50. When you read negative reviews, ask yourself, “What would Jade do? (Or Emma, or Rochelle, or Wisteria, or Dusk?)” With your imagination I’m sure you could come up with a fitting retribution! (Kidding!) The reviewer is probably just jealous of your talent! Hugs!

  51. Well. I loved the first seven books in the Dowser series. Your post reminded me that I had never read 8 or 8.5, so off I went to purchase them for my Kindle. Consider that revenge on the haters! LOL!

  52. Meghan, I hope you’re reading all the positive comments here and they are lifting you up. You should focus on ALL of these rather than the one crappy one.
The worlds you have created are incredible. I can finish it in a day IF my children and husband leave me alone to read from dawn till midnight – that never happens. And if it did, it would be my problem 🙂
I always look forward to your books! Thanks for all you do.

  53. Your books just hook us in and they read quickly. This makes them seem shorter than they are. Some of us are better at recognizing the talent that keeps us reading than others. Deep slow breaths. Your skills are very much appreciated.

    1. I will also add that you are one of the few authors I actually buy. Most of my reading/listening is via the library system.

  54. I’m so sorry this happened to you and that you will write about Jade again in the future. And people like these two commenters should really not comments unless they have something constructive to say – based on fact and not their bizarre opinions! Your books are fantastic! And as you know, I buy my favourite series of yours in both electronic and softcover format. And I would pay more for your books! Take care, S.

  55. I adore ALL of your books. I read/buy 200-300 books per year. I eagerly LOOK for your awesome, intriguing, engaging stories full of really cool characters.

Do I wish they were longer? Sure, I never want them to end.
Would I pay more for longer stories? Absolutely. But you release frequently so I really can’t complain.
Are they too short compared to others? No way, not for the price..

Maybe the person who left a bad review just lost a loved one and took their grief / anger out on you?? Ignore them and keep doing your thing.

  56. I am so sorry that this person affected you. I hope that in the future that the “jade muse” makes it way back to you. I love your writing, your characters, and the adept universe. It allows me to escape with the “friends” you have created. The price you charge is irrelevant, as I totally understand. I am a technical writer/educator and many times I am on a commission, so any $’s that I make, are totally and completely based upon sales and a % of those $’s. Bless you for bringing forth your artistry, and allow us to “journey” with you.

  57. I’m so sorry there are people like this in anyone’s universe. I too, can’t understand why someone, if so “disgusted”, would continue to read your wonderful books. We love you, Meghan, and the world you’ve created for us.

  58. It’s pretty clear that whoever wrote that review is misguided and/or just mean. I’m glad to see so many here have jumped it to show support.

I found you because you offered Dowser 1 for free, and I have continued to follow you because your books are awesome. I have read them all and I preorder them as soon as they become available. There is only one other author that I can say that about.

I wrote one of the only reviews I’ve ever written because the ending of the Dowser series was so satisfying. But I’d still love to see more of Jade. Please don’t let small-spirited people keep you from revisiting her when you miss her.

Thank you for not abandoning the Adept world and for continuing to bring us new members of that world. It is so refreshing to see such a well planned and tightly integrated world.

Please take joy in the knowledge that your work is loved by so many. ❤️

  59. Since the first free Dowser, I was hooked! I happily purchased each one after and usually by preorder! You are a favorite, I have KU, and still I purchase from my faves because I want to support my addiction to the wonderful words you write. I hope someday you are able to revisit Jade and the crew. I do miss them, but I am loving Dusk! And waiting on more of the Amplifier series. You do you, ignore the negative as hard as it is. You are worth, triple the positives you get!!💜💜

  60. Honestly anyone who complains about the cost of your books doesn’t live in reality. I am always surprised at how inexpensive your online books are. F#CK anyone who whined about the cost of your books. You deserve more.

  61. I first discovered your books when I read Dowser 1 about 3 years ago. I then voraciously went through every book you have ever published and enjoyed each and every one of them. And yes, I would pay more for your books just because of the joy they bring to my life. Without knowing it, you have helped me make it through the death of 2 parents and 2 suicide attempts of one of my children in the last 18 months. When I can’t solve or control life’s problems and horrors, when my head pounds like Thor is practicing with his hammer on my head, and at 2:30 A.M. when my mind is whirling and I can’t sleep, I can wander out to the family room with my ebook reader and Meghan Ciana Doidge’s words and catch my breath so that maybe, just maybe, I can put one foot in front of the other the next day. It allows me a short reprieve from life, calms my emotions, and stops the incessant circle of thoughts looking for answers I can’t provide. Thank you. That’s what your gift means to me. I cannot make hurtful, dull-witted words written to you disappear, but I can replace them with something much more positive and meaningful.

  62. Ok, I don’t ever comment on this or any other blog I am registered on. I usually just read the conversations and enjoy the interactions.
However today I have to add my own anger and dismay at the tone of the review and my sorrow and how you took it to heart. There is no possible reason to complain about the cost or length of your books. Like many others I started with the FREE Dowser 1 and have preordered every book you have written since, the price is ridiculously low for the value and will not hesitate when you are forced to raise your price.
I will add my hope that Jade will again begone whispering in your ear someday but in the meantime I love all the new additions to your universe.
Take heart, we all love you, your imagination and your effort.

  63. New Year Best Wishes from Yorkshire and enormous thanks for all your wonderful stories and characters. As an artist it is hard not to hear a negative voice but as everyone has said you have a huge audience gratefully waiting for your next book to lighten our lives. Virtual hugs from Karen (Librarian lover of fantasy)

  64. As my mother says, “Some people will bitch if they’re hung with a new rope”. 😊

Just keep doing you, MCD. 💜

  65. Wow some people! If you love an author, these days you are able to buy into so much more than the books. Email newsletters, free short stories, recipes, tasters of whats coming next, previews of artwork, it’s a whole package. And the prices that you charge for all your creativity, stories, imagination are not expensive either – you are probably not going to become a billionaire from all these wonderful amazing works you put out there.
She loves your books but leaves a horrible review? What a flipping cheek! She does not fit in with all of us 🙂 🙂 xxBarbs

  66. Gosh, I always thought your books were underpriced (especially the ebooks! so cheap!) so even if they were novellas (which theyre obviously not) they’re still very reasonably priced! I guess people don’t realise that your write in a trilogy style, or they would expect a bit of a ‘cliffhanger’ in the second book, but I think you always resolve the main story line with each book, so I like the little (not) ‘cliffhangers’ it because it keeps me excited for the next book! Book 8 is more of a shock and more of an obvious ‘not everything has been resolved yet’ that the previous books (thats when I realised you wrote triilogies!), but I’d only be mad about a ‘clifhanger’ if you stopped writing and it was never ever resolved!

I once had an author whos books I really liked but they went from cheap books, to normal priced books (fine, happy to pay that!) but then their newest e-books was more expensive than a normal paperback, and it was not as good as their other books (I did buy it because I really liked their other books). So I decided I would just not buy books that I thought were ‘overpriced’ (Fair if the author needs or wants to charge that but I just can’t justufy spending more than a normal paperback price on a ebook), I didn’t however, leave a reveiw saying I was discusted, or dissapointed, like… just don’t buy it if you don’t think it’s worth the money, rather than buying them and being annoyed about it and leaving mean reveiws. I always try to rmemeber theres an author behined the book who’s my reveiw may emotionaly effect one way or the other, so even if I have a negative comment I try to be polite and fair about it. (and avoid strong words like discusted).

You’ll always get ‘unhappy customers’ even if you were God and you wrote the perfect novel! Some people just enjoy complaining I think. Try not to let it get to you too much, lots and lots of people really really love what you write! (As all these comments from everyone shows!).

I love your books, I think you have a real tallent and you obviously work really hard, write what feels good to you, if thats Jade then awesome, if thats Emma, great, if its Dusk then I love her, if it’s someone totally knew, then I’m excited to meet them! <3

    1. I’ll also add I pre-order al your books on my e-reader (I don’t usually do that sort of thing) and then, even though I’ve read them and they’re stored on my Kobo, I still collect all your paper backs so I can have them all sitting pretty on my shelf because they’re just my favourite books.

  67. Amazing how one nasty and derogatory comment can affect a person. The timing of it is always at a low time in our lives and scars one for years. So sorry you have to deal with it. I find your prices fair, am grateful for your giveaways and look eagerly for your next book. Your cupcake book was free and I printed out my favorites and smile every time I bake. I think back on the story or character associated with my goody.
Just so you know the positive impact you have, you helped me keep it together in the sudden death of my father and then 6 months later, my mom gave up and joined him. Your stories helped me escape and start to heal.
Let Michael read the reviews -you have a lot on your plate with those miserable headaches. Enjoy Molly and Michael because life is just too short to let unknowns upset you.

  68. Oh my Goodness, what a nasty piece of work that person is. Your prices are great, yes I would like the books longer but,,,, It just makes me want them more. I miss Jade and group too. Ignore stupid crap like that. Just listen to your fans who love you and your books and will take what ever you give us..

  69. The person who wrote that whiny-ass review obviously read your book in one sitting because she couldn’t put it down. And she apparently doesn’t notice the prices of other books in a similar category which are much higher.
Your rant was very detailed, informative and to the point. I wish that reviewer could read it and learn some compassion and get connected to the reality of what it’s like to write for a living. Those of us who are your dedicated fans know how hard you work and how much of your soul you put into everything you write. We will always appreciate you and I will pay whatever price you put on your books to have the pleasure of reading your words. Thank you for what you do. You help keep me sane in this difficult world we are in.

  70. Ignore that post! I pay for your books willingly while I search the library offerings for most of the books I read. Your prices are low, I was looking at some of my favorite authors and noticing the price increases. Raise your prices, it is a lot of work writing and not out of line! I will pay! I miss Jade too! Your characters are like friends.

  71. You can see from all the comments above that you and your characters are much loved. I crave your books. I have never thought them too expensive. Complainers will always complain – and you just can’t fix stupid. Please don’t let one fool turn you off, change your direction, or steal your momentum. You can’t make everyone happy, just yourself, by doing what you love. And know most of us love what you do.
I hope all the comments above helped brighten what started as a crappy day. Hugs.

  72. Meghan, I am so sorry you had that kind of a review. Your books are worth every penny and more. Your books are wonderful and I enjoy everyone one of them. I always pre-order your books as I can’t wait to read them when they come out. I hope one day you feel like revisiting Jade and her friends as I love them and I would love more stories with them. But since I love all your characters I can’t complain as you are always giving us new stories to read. Thank you for what you do and know that for every complainer there are 100s of us that greatly appreciate what you do.

  73. I’m adding my agreement too! I found Dowser 1 for free on kindle and fell in love with Jade and the Adept universe. I’ve read everything since (several times as well as the audiobooks) and don’t even look at the price when I preorder your new releases as I know they will be worth it! I would love a cameo from Jade – her and Warner have been married for a while now could there be babies coming??
Thank you for everything you do for us fans 🙂

  74. Your books are the only ones I buy. I usually just read what I can get for free. They are worth much more than you charge. Maybe that person just thinks they are novellas because they are so engrossing that you are finished before you are ready to be. I am rereading all of your books. I was trying to make myself save Invoking Infinity for after I read them all again, but I only made it through the first two before I broke down and read it.
Don’t let negative people distract you from your writing. There are the rest of us eagerly awaiting the next adventure in your adept universe.

  75. Your prices are awesome for value received! A movie ticket costs more and you can’t reread it! One of the reasons I chose not get/join kindle unlimited was so authors would get their full amount. Plus I want to be able to come back and visit old friends. Don’t let this person(whiner) get you down.

  76. I read this with a heavy eye roll – for that reviewer, not for you, MCD! I’m sorry that you’re being met with such negativity and frustration. I can’t even imagine what was up everyone’s butts after Dowser 8, so that’s also annoying not only for you, but for those of us who love your adept universe. Hopefully some of the positive reviews outweigh the haters. I, for one, read Dowser 1 because I saw it listed for free via BookBub. I read it and immediately bought the next books in the series. And then devoured about 10 of your books in a row. I finally had to calm myself down and now I actually force myself to space out the reading so I don’t finish everything too soon. I love reading books by indie authors and the prices of your books are quite reasonable. I’m always surprised when I go to buy a new one at how low the cost is. The internet brings out the worst in some, but hopefully it can also help bring out the love when you might need it, too. <3

  77. *hugs* Jade blew into my world for free, and I will pay to keep her coming back. Even the most expensive chocolate, haha. Nothing is too much for her and her friends.

I thought you wanted to focus on other characters and were done with Jade because you felt you had written all you wanted to. Now to find out it’s because of haters!!!! >:| Such bad people! Even if you don’t add more to Jade’s stories, I don’t want you to end with that. Is there something we can do for you so the Dowser 8 awfulness can be a shadow of a memory and the good ones outshine it when it comes to Jade…?

  78. Cheer up, you’re still getting new customers. I just powered through the Archvist, the Dowser (5) and I see me in two weeks and found them quite satisfying.

  79. Just wow…You are amazing! Your talent is amazing! I love everything!! Prices are amazing!! And if I might add, a very prolific author!! Anyone a fan of GRRM? Yeah, exactly. Meghan ,please dont give that person any more thought…I spread your name and books far and wide…we all love you❤️

  80. You do not need to justify anything. I am very grateful for your stories as they allow me to escape and switch off from the current situation/pandemic our world finds itself in and all the other crap my family and I have had to deal with over the last 2 years. I think the prices you charge are extremely reasonable and a lot more affordable than a lot of other Authors’ novels. More Dowser stories would be fantastic but if your head isn’t in the right space, that’s ok because you have given your readers so many characters to follow and love. You also have to be one of the most generous authors I have every come across with your giveaways and your time. A friend said to me “Don’t sweat the small stuff” but it is difficult when it’s negative and peoples’ perspective of small stuff varies and what’s viewed as small to one person can be massive to another. You are an amazingly creative writer with a very loyal following. That’s a big positive and, hopefully, mitigates some of the negative. Sending love and positive thoughts!

  81. Yeah… you need to ignore these.
Good grief. Seems like all people do is bitch these days. Like, seriously, LOOKING for something to bitch about.
You just keep doing what you do so beautifully.

  82. MCD,
I have bought all of your books. I will never complain about the cost of your books. I am a loyal, quiet fan who rarely writes a post. It is sad to hear that a human caused the Jade series to come to an end.
I was a reading snob before I found you. I wouldn’t even give ebook writers a shot. I got your first book for free and was so smitten that I binged the rest of your novels. Your novels loosened me up to find authors such as Shannon Mayer, K.F. Breene, and Ilona Andrews. I adore all that you write. Do I wish that your novels were longer? Of course I do. I wish they were all the size of a library’s unabridged dictionary, so that I would rarely need to leave your adept universe. Your read is that good. I am always anxiously awaiting your next book. Thank you for writing through your migraines. Thank you for not price gouging your loyal fans. Thank you for being so damn creative and willing to share your gifts with us. Thank you for Jade and Kett and all of the rest of your lovely, well rounded, well developed characters. Thank you for a plot and a universe that never gets boring. I hope that you begin to believe in us enough one day to bring Jade back. But if not, thank you for giving her to us for as long as you did. You are amazing, keep that shit up MCD.

  83. Oh! One more thing… I have re-read every one of your books multiple times. Every time I’m bored with the latest kindle.offerings, every time you publish a new book, etc. And as a voracious reader of Kindle books, I have to say, you are/ have a fantastic editor. I don’t see spelling, punctuation, or grammar errors in your books. Prolific ebook writers – and I won’t name them – that I also read over and over, have MFAs and publish error-ridden books on a regular basis. It doesn’t stop me from buying their works and enjoying them, but I appreciate it tremendously when your books have been properly written and edited. If that makes me a snob, so be it. I know that nobody is perfect, but it is obvious that you have made tremendous effort toward producing quality. Don’t let the worlds whiners dictate anything in your life. They search for shit to bitch about. Whah whah whah, just to get attention. Don’t give it to them.

  84. You definitely should ignore this type of complaint. Clearly ridiculous. It never occurred to me to question the length of any of them. They have always seemed to be exactly the right length. And I just checked your prices and your books are bargains. Sheesh. Don’t worry about it until movies start charging by the minute ;-).

  85. First, a general comment: I have depended on Amazon reviews for many of my purchases. Unfortunately, bogus claims and unjustified negativity has diminished my confidence in reviews. I think savvy consumers are wise to this trend and are leaning to navigate through misinformation and hateful comments & reviews.
Concerning your wonderful offerings…they have provided me with so much entertainment that I can hardly wait for your next release. You weave such wonderful stories filled with engaging characters and plots that it is so easy to become immersed! Your Dowser series is one of my favorites but I also became immersed in your other series. I was disappointed that there wasn’t another pending Amplifier release but quickly transferred my enjoyment to the Infinity series.
You are an exceptional author and I am a huge fan! Hopefully, you will ignore the trolls and keep turning out wonderful stories for your expectant fans! (BTW, I don’t like to comment but made an exception in the hope of offering my heartfelt encouragement)

  86. Awww. This makes my heartbreak for you and for all of your readers like myself who fell in love with Jade, Kandy, Blossom, Kett, Mory, and everyone else in the Cake in a Cup orbit. As I tell my husband (who knows all of these characters too from my long-winded chapter recaps), I miss the original “band.” Furthermore, since it was addressed as a concern, I am AMAZED at your prices, giveaways, and inclusions!!! I have started to pre-ordering all titles, because I’m itching to get my next Adept fix. As a avid reader, I can’t think of another long-running series that has made me feel all the feels. How many Brownies have I cried over? How many times have I laughed out loud at Paisley’s snarkiness? Felt the passion radiate off the page from an Oracle and a Tiger? And let’s not forget, most importantly ate cupcakes for breakfast? Unfortunately, I realize it is always harder to silence the negative voices, but I have nothing but love, gratitude and appreciation for you and your and the Adept Universe you’ve created and continue to expand. *tearing up now * And just like the previous commenter, I tend not to comment or write reviews, as it’s been a hard couple of years for Karens, but this is, you are, Jade, Warner, Kandy, Kett and even Desmond are so fecking important and need to know how much you mean to all of us.
