Bake a cupcake and win five paperbacks

CONTEST CLOSED! Winner: CORI from NEW YORK, USA. Lucky #4

I still have a few of those misprinted paperbacks hanging around in a box in my office. It’s a handy box, because it raises my laptop up when I’m working from the treadmill desk, but it isn’t very pretty. I should replace it with something in the nearish future, so the books need to go! Plus it feels like a long time since I’ve hosted a giveaway.

This is the final full set of misprints. The books are slightly streaked with pink lines. The files/printings have all been corrected, so once these are gone there won’t be any more. I’d be happy to sign them, personalized or not.

IMG_0372Do you want to win all FIVE of these paperbacks?

Yes?

Then, to enter:

1. Bake some cupcakes inspired by one of the cupcake creations in the Dowser books. You can use one of my recipes or your own – from scratch or a mix, your choice.

2. Take a picture of your cupcake(s) and post that picture in the comments as a .jpg (if possible).

Unfortunately, there isn’t mechanism that allows you to post a picture directly in the comments, but you can link a .jpg. The comment thread should embed it automatically — direct links to the .jpg are best for this. If this isn’t possible for you then you can link to a post on Instagram/Flickr/Facebook/Twitter/etc. This will just show up as the link, not the picture though.

3.  Tell me about your cupcake. Which Dowser cupcake inspired yours – Lust in a Cup, Sunshine in a Cup, Buzz in a Cup, etc?

This is not a baking or beauty contest. Even with how much I bake I cannot manage bake/frost a ‘pretty’ cupcake.

FUN! FUN!

Notes/Rules: OPEN INTERNATIONALLY. Each cupcake/picture will be assigned an entry number. The winning entry will then be selected via random number generator. One entry per person. Please make sure to fill out a valid email address in the comment form. Email addresses are not collected for any purpose other than notifying the contest winner.

If you haven’t commented on the blog before, or you comment from a different IP address, the comments are moderated. So don’t worry if you don’t see your entry right away. I will approve it, then assign it an entry number.

Contest closes SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 2015 at 8 p.m. PDT.

NEW TO THE DOWSER SERIES BUT YOU STILL WANT TO PLAY ALONG? Dowser 1 is currently perma-free on all retailers.

  1. I started with the Ecstasy in a Cup but I just couldn’t bring myself to put lemon on chocolate, so I thought back to the scene in Dowser 2, where Jade is making cupcakes at Desmond’s house, she makes a blueberry buttercream on dark chocolate cake so I went that. That cake wasn’t ready for a name.

  2. Hope this is OK for a pic…I had difficulties.

I chose sass in a cup because it always been one I wanted make. Love the love this one had in the books.

I stayed pretty true to the recipe, I changed cocoa to lots and lots of melted 80% choc. Mmmmm

    1. Entry #3! These are gorgeous! Sorry the cake is a bit dry (I hate that). I always wonder if a change of altitude or season can make a difference. Say I develop this recipe on the west coast during a rainy spring and you bake them 2000 miles above sea level in the middle of a dry, hot summer.

I was surprised how much I liked these. I’ve baked them a couple of times now.

Remember to enter into the IndieVisible contest as well 🙂

      1. I’m in San Francisco, CA which is west Coast as well. I think part of my problem was older ingredients, and some that hadn’t been contained in an air-tight storage for a few months. Any sort of thing could be to blame. But they were SO tasty!!! Today I’m giving away the rest to my co-workers.

      2. Yeah, I”m pretty sure I’ve had issues with my baking soda before. But also new ovens. We’ve only been here on Salt Spring since last September. I’m back cooking with a gas stove/oven and I’m really, really not a fan. We’re thinking of doing trip down the San Fran in November. We’ve never been. I also think you’ll like a certain section of Dowser 5 😉

      3. I think our gas stove is just screwed. It cooks unevenly and way too hot (though I do have a thermometer in it). I’m slowly learning. Turn the pan/sheet every five minutes, etc.

We are big foodies, so I hear from all sources that we will love SF. If we don’t manage to get there this fall, we will next.

  3. I Made Cozy in a Cup. Spending a relaxing day at home with my son who took over the tv. I decided to start re-reading the series. And after reading all the recipes decided to make this one being that I just bought a nice bunch of bananas.

  5. I can’t remember what the peppermint cupcake was called but I thought jade made one based on Kett. Well here’s mine 🙂 chocolate cake with cheesecake filling & mint extract icing topped with a mint leaf.

    1. Entry #6 – end of Dowser 3, Jade makes a molten cupcake based on Kandy and Kett’s magic. She wanted to call it Unity in a Cup. But Kandy wanted to call it Orgasm in a Cup.

I can’t seem to see your photo, but you also posted it on Facebook, so I trust you. 😀

  6. oh yea the crazy cool molten thing 😀 yea i thought it was kandy too but thats berries and i didn’t do that, i was going to check your blog recipes but then i forgot >.< celiac disease causes brain fog uggghhh

thanks, i tried to put it in as jpeg but now the box isn't showing up for that anyway 😛

  7. I made the ecstacy in a cup. I sent you an email with the picture.

  8. My favorite of all cupcakes is Jade’s favorite. I could eat them all myself, but thankfully my husband went kayaking today and I sent all but three with him.

Of the 21 recipes in the cake section of my recipe file, 14 are for chocolate cake. I should throw 13 of them away because I only make this recipe. I usually make the matching frosting, but I forgot to buy cream cheese for the frosting and used Hershey’s Perfectly Chocolate Frosting (http://www.food.com/recipe/hersheys-perfectly-chocolate-chocolate-frosting-448818). It made the perfect amount for the batch of cupcakes. Since reading all the Dowser books led to making more cupcakes, I bought the cupcake dispenser thingy in the background of the picture. I hated filling the papers and dripping batter everywhere. The dispenser thing is the bomb.

By the way, when is Dowser 5 coming? Can hardly wait. Am going to re-read Dowsers to prepare for #5.

    1. Entry #8! Cupcake dispenser? Interesting! So true about having multiple recipes for chocolate cake. Ha. Oh, God. I want cupcakes so badly right now. Dowser 5 is currently with the editor, but I have a feeling he will be sending it my way very soon. The proofreader is booked for July 6, and I’m crossing my fingers I will make that deadline! Thanks for playing along, Linda. <3

  9. I love chocolate and peanut butter together, so I made Bliss in a cup, chocolate fudge cake and peanut butter butter cream frosting. They are really good. The best cupcake I’ve had in awhile, I’ll be making these again!!

      1. The inspiration is mad he didn’t get any! They just don’t understand the “no chocolate for dogs” rule. Even though they hear it… a lot! Lol

  10. Hi Meghan, I found the Dowser series on Friday, started reading it and came here to find out when the next book was going to be out only to discover this giveaway! Serendipity!

I LOVE baking and all the cupcakes Jade makes sound absolutely scrumptious. I made Lust in a Cup for comfort eating chocolate as the weekend is nearly over (I’m from Malaysia) but I’m thinking of making Charm in a cup next week with some of my homemade strawberry jam 🙂

  11. This is my own creation, Orgasm in a Cup. My best friend and I affectionately refer to the frosting as orgasmic, and it truly is. It’s a triple chocolate cupcake with chocolate buttercream that has been laced with almond flavoring. I have a small cottage business baking and decorating cakes, and I have recently gotten sucks in to your books.

  12. I made my own take on Lust in a Cup, but to make it a bit healthier, I used a bit of mashed potatoes in place of flour (it makes a cupcake that gets moister in the fridge, actually!) and topped it with whipped chocolate ganache frosting. Unfortunately they didn’t turn out quite as pretty as last time, so here is a link to a better frosting experience- https://instagram.com/p/zTX8Z3zXWG/

And I would love a carrot cake or red velvet cupcake in a future book! Both of those are my favorites!

    1. Entry #15! I have two carrot cake recipes: Comfort in A Cup and Solace in a Cup 🙂 My favs too. Though the Lust in a Cup were my go-to recipe for years. No plans for a red velvet, but you never know.

      1. I’ll admit, I’m more of a fan of straight-up carrot cake, so the chocolate carrot cake isn’t as much my cup of tea. However, I am a huge fan of chocolate and zucchini- I’ll have to turn that into a cupcake!

      2. The Comfort is straight carrot cake 🙂 A really traditional recipe, though. I do a zucchini chocolate cake, but only when I have too much zucchini or one that grows too large to be tasty on its own.

      3. That is the problem with growing zucchini- you can never give all of it away!

I do need to convert my blueberry buckle into a cupcake. It would make it so much easier to bring to work! However, I’m still trying to figure out a good frosting to go with it- it does need the blueberry sauce cascading over so it’s the right amount of blueberry flavor, and to remind me of summers up near Canada (my original recipe comes from a blueberry festival there).
