Birthday giveaway: a few of my favourite things

GIVEAWAY CLOSED. WINNER: LUCKY #56 – Jennifer from Massachusetts, USA!

It’s my birthday today – yay!

I get as much enjoyment by giving a gift to someone else on the day of my birth as I do receiving a gift. Occasionally, I’ll buy a meal for a homeless person or take a group of friends out for brunch, but this year I wanted to collect a few of my favourite things – new and old – into one box and give them away to a lovely reader. Your support this year has been very welcomed and much appreciated!

Fun! Fun!

Without further ado, here are a few of my favourite things for 2015:

MCD's birthday box of favourites.
MCD’s birthday box of favourites.

I had a great time putting this eclectic collection together. Clockwise from top left: felted wool dryer balls (handmade by MCD); three paperbacks from my favourite urban fantasy series: Magic Bites, Storm Front, and Moon Called; a Little Traveller pin; hand cream, foot cream, and lip balm from L’Occitane (I use these every day!); small-batch caramels from Scarlata (my favourite discovery from the Northwest Chocolate Festival 2015); and, of course, some Oracle Series tattoos.

Would you like to collect this box of favourites for your very own?

You would?

Okay then!

  1. Wow first let me say happy birthday!! Second this is awesome thank you for the chance. My favorite thing from 2015 was the newest dowser book! Yours are the only books I preorder haha

  2. Well, first of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Second of all lovely giveaway, and third what I like the most of this year is how much I have been able to grow at my job, not necessarily in a position, but the way I do my job. I feel more confident and can handle things better. Is a big accomplishment. Love your books, can’t wait for the next!

  3. My favorite thing that has happened to me so far in 2015 is finding out, this past Monday, that I AM PREGNANT with my second child 😍

  4. So far my favorite thing is finding a gentleman here in Lubbock Texas that makes dark chocolate by hand. 72% mahogany chocolate. Divine.

    1. I am also from good ol’ Lubbock Texas. I’d love to know where you found chocolate like that here. 🙂 please and thank you!

  5. Happy birthday to you! my favorite for 2015 are your new book and a few other new books. I got a new job. Tried out some awesome new recipes both sweet and savory. Got to see my family (not favorite but also recently lost family)

  6. Happy Birthday! That reminds me that it’s also my cousin’s 5th birthday! Ha!
I think my favorite thing from 2015 has been finding so many awesome new – to me – stories/books/authors. Life has been stressful and escaping into these books has been a good way to deal.

  7. Happy Birthday! May there be much chocolate coming your way today! The birth of my grand nephew and niece, the new Dowser book, and Ginger Elisabeth chocolates here in Sacramento!

  8. Happy Birthday! I think my favorite thing so far this year was getting my motorcycle and going to Sturgis for the 75th anniversary. I loved the black hills, and I’m enjoying learning to ride.

  9. Happy Birthday! I see that we share a fav writer (Butcher). My favorite thing so far this year was a hug from my daughter, hadn’t seen her in 3 years. She lives in NYC, a cost prohibitive place to go from OKlahoma.

  10. My favorite thing from 2015? My nephew. He wasn’t born this year, or any remarkable like that – but he makes everyone laugh, which is something we all desperately needed this year.
His favorite phrases are; “You’re not nice to me!” (In a totally snotty tone), and “FANKS!” (His version of thanks). Which of course, all of the adults have adopted.
With my dad discovering he has cancer, to passing away a month later, then my mom discovering a tumor, and a LOT of other crap, that little monster has been a bright spot for all of us. He’s the best part of 2015.

  11. Happy Birthday Meghan! Hope you are getting lots of treats – you definitely deserve it! My favourite thing this year has been finding you!! I love your books and look forward to each new one! My husband and I just returned home after a camping trip across Canada…and your books came with us! My own ‘heaven’ on the road!
Have a great weekend, enjoy your birthday and Thanksgiving….and a big thank you to you for all your creativity!

  12. Hope you have a wonderful birthday honey xx

My favourite thing of 2015 is going on short breaks with my hubby around the UK.

We’ve discovered many little knooks and crannies and lovely towns and cities together. We’ve finally gotten to the age where we can go out and about discovering our country and appreciating our time together.

Last weekend we spent time in York. We visited York Minster cathedral and revelled in the beautiful architecture.

Also found a gorgeous fudge shop that sells it by the SLAB! Awesome. Many varied treats jumped into my handbag…..some yet to be consumed.

  13. My favorite thing of 2015, so far, is that Heather has learned that it isn’t hard to make cheesecake and she LOVES IT! We nearly always have it in the house. Fortunately our pants still fit too!
We have been trying different chocolate this year too!
    Happy Birthday, Meghan!

  14. Happy Birthday, Meghan! So thankful for my two HS Senior twins who will br graduating soon, my awesome hobby and my love of books! Really hope you have a great day! Can’t wait until the new Dowser book:) Gonna start the Oracle series today!!

  15. I have too many favorite things about 2015 (so far) to pick just one. So here’s a top 3.
    1. Celebrated 20 years of marriage with my other half.
    2. See my niece (who is unable to have children of her own) become a great foster mom to 2 natural brothers and getting to be a part of their lives.
    3. Learning that I share a birthday with one of my davorite new authors that I discovered this year. 😉

  16. Happy Birthday, Libra.
My favorite things that have happened this year (so far):
Going to my brothers wedding in Tacoma. It was beautiful. So nice to escape the Austin heat in August for a little while.
I went to Memphis for my 40th birthday (September 28) and I had a pumpkin pie soda ice cream float, which was amazing. I attended a music festival there.
As far as my favorite books go, I have thoroughly enjoyed finding the Kate Daniels series, the Dowser series and the books by Sarah Addison Allen. I’ve read all of the series and all of SAA’s books.
Pretty nerdy, but my library has limits on the numbers of ebooks you can check out, but because I’ve reviewed so many books my check out limit just increased from 5 to 10. Which is good because they also limit he numbers of books you can put on hold. That was pretty awesome. I read the first two books of the Dowser series through the library, that’s all they owned. I bought the other 3 and recommended through the overdrive account that my library purchase your other books.
Hope you have a great day!

    1. Entry #23 – That is a great list of favourites! I’m glad you found me via Overdrive. I offer the books to libraries for free, they just have to download them. Thank you for recommending them!!

  17. I almost never do these contests because I can’t pick my favorite quote from the books! So glad not to have to pick!

    First of all: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I have had a wonderful year, all in all. My favorite part was when my husband returned from deployment. He’s been home for 6 months and it still feels like he was just gone yesterday. I’m so glad he’s home with myself and our 2 girls!

  18. Happy Birthday!!! My favorite thing about 2015 so far is finding the dowser series :), can’t wait for the next one. Also I have a daughter that just started highschool, it seems like she was a little girl just yesterday :).

  19. My favorite thing from 2015 was starting school fulltime to become a Radiologic Technologist! Definitely a full committment that my husband has encouraged; and with 4 kids!!! I love to read and have to wait for breaks in semesters 🙁

  20. Favorite thing of 2015? Discovering your books, I think! Crazy that I’ve also gotten interested in another books series with Jade as the protagonist’s name. I just LOVE losing myself in an alternate universe (or two or three)!!

  21. *Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you!* My favorite thing about 2015 is almost everything about this year. My husband, “upgraded” my wedding ring, we were able to get him a new vehicle, my son started kindergarten, and my niece finally learned to say my name!

  22. Let me be like the 100th person to say happy birthday lol, my favorite thing from 2015 So far is the fact that my foster daughter is FINALLY fully potty trained and my youngest daughter is almost potty trained….GOODBYE DIAPERS! HELLO…..more laundry

      1. Lol my daughter TRIED (and I say that with immense pride seeing as how she poops like a dog in her room) to poop on the potty, made a huge mess but still had to commend the effort.

  23. This year has been full of wonder. Apr my 9 grand child was born. In July I found (on nook) Your magic series and I’m looking forward to the new book. I live on a small farm out side of Tacoma and due to the weather was able to donate farm fresh food to local food banks. Sept my son started college and is able to pay for it by himself. Oct 8 I turned 60 my husband gave me a full makeover and an 11 vacation those are just some of my highlights there are more but this is getting too long.

  24. Happy birthday! May the chocolate be of high quality and rain down from the heavens 😉

Favorite things from this year: I always love my camping trips and being surrounded by nature. I practiced my baking skills and made a cake over the fire, and it was delicious. I made a chicken coop practically all by myself for my newly adopted chickens. For having no set plan and using scrap lumber, I say it turned out mighty fine, and has some pretty fancy features. My freebie espresso maker is the gift that keeps on giving. My morning coffee is on a whole new level now. Nothing beats steamed milk. And lastly, discovering a favorite new author who has a lovely series about one of my favorite hobbies, baking cupcakes 🙂

    1. Entry #37 – There has indeed been a lot of birthday chocolate!! Okay, so cake on the fire is pretty damn cool. I baked cookies on the BBQ when the gas ran out last Feb, not as cool. LOL I got chicks at the very end of 2014! But Michael built our coop. I have 4 hens, 2 pullets and one rooster now. They aren’t happy with our recent move. They’ve even stopped laying in protest. 🙁

  25. Happy Birthday, I hope this upcoming year is filled with joy, peace and prosperity. This year so far has been stressful. I am thankful for my friends, both old and new! Without them I would not laugh so much and get through the tough times!

  26. Happy Birthday! Kuddos to you for giving to others!! My favorite part of 2015 is getting to read the new dowser book. Absolutely LOVED IT!! You are one of my favorite authors and I can’t wait for another book!!!!!!!

  27. Happy Birthday, Megan! 😀 Thank you for the giveaway!
My favorite thing so far this year has been the driving experience. I’m having driving classes and I am almost ready for the exam. I was afraid I wouldn’t like to drive or even be scared… But as it turns out, driving is awesome! Can’t wait to get my license 🙂

  28. Happy Birthday! 2015, my new horse Wunder, Lucerne Dark Chocolate milk and for my awesome neighbours, who let me cut their hay this year for free, even though hay was 3 times the amount it was last year because of the drought!

  29. My favorite thing this year would have to be the birth of my second son in August! I would share the cuteness but can’t attach pictures.

Hope you have a Happy Birthday

    1. Entry #42 – I hate that not being about to attach pictures to blog comments easily thing. You have to have them uploaded someone else … then you can attach them as a URL and they show up here. Sigh. CONGRATS though!!

  30. Happy birthday! Reading is my favorite pasttime and your series are on top on my reading lists. In 2015, I would like to add life! I am currently in breast cancer treatments and you don’t realize how great your life is, until something happens! I’m looking forward to a healthy 2026 full of books and chocolate!

    1. Entry #43 – Yes! Here is to a healthy 2016 full of books and chocolate! I hope your treatments are going well though. And aren’t too taxing. Please take care of yourself!!

  31. Happy Birthday! (It’s my best friend’s birthday, too.) My favorite thing so far this year is my new job: working for a company that truly appreciates its employees is fantastic!

  32. Happy Birthday!!!. And thank you this is a wonderful Idea. My favorite things about 2015. I eloped in February in Banff. it was great and lots of fun. My sister got married in August and brought the entire family together and everyone got along for the first time in over 20 years…I found out about bookbub. which introduced me to Cupcakes, trinkets and other deadly magic. which I loved so much I had to get the all the others in the series. I finished them all in three weeks. I very much look forward to the next one… there’s still plenty of 2015 left and I can’t wait to see what it brings.

  33. Happy Birthday, Meghan! Thank you for your generous spirit with this give away on your birthday. My favorite thing from 2015 is getting our fireplace fixed. Now this winter I can sit in front of a lovely fire eat chocolate and read your books. 🎂😊

  34. Happy Happy Birthday!!! My favorite thing so far this year has been Biotene Moisturizing mouth spray. Sounds crazy but I live in the desert in Lake Havasu City Arizona and my mouth is ALWAYS dry! This stuff is awesome!

    1. Entry #51 – very cool! Friends of ours did one of the peaks [eta: Mount Whitney] in Yosemite National Park this year. They had to start at 2am!! And I think it took 18 hours? CRAZY.

      1. Ours wasn’t that bad we started at 7 am and it took about 6 hours but well worth it!

  35. Happy Birthday Meghan.
My favourite thing is a Nine West beach bag covered in pictures of pineapples. It has a beautiful braided handle. So fancy. So nice. Such a deal on clearance for $22. It is silly but I just want to use it all the time!

  36. Happy Birthday, indeed! Always appreciate your birthdays because, statistically, the more you have the longer you’ll live. I think my favorite thing about 2015 meeting new friends and acquaintances.

  38. Happy birthday!
I’m going to cheat a little, because my favorite thing from 2015 hasn’t happened yet. In December I will be graduating with my RN! So that will be my favorite thing.
I guess being able to have the summer off and catch up on my reading is a close second… 🙂

  39. Happy Birthday Meghan!
One of my fav things for 2015 is discovering & devouring your series this summer 😍
I now have my sister hooked. My most recent love is adopting Panther, a 4 year old cat. He is such a love. He loves to cuddle & I see us having many cuddles this winter with more great books 😃

  40. Happy Birthday! Well let’s see my favorite things are the aromatherapy sleep products from bath and body works, julep products, my dowser series on my kindle, my favorite yarn to make scarves out of, my Chelsea Wolfe album on my iPod and my favorite military style leather jacket from torrid 😍 Ugh I can go on and on but this should do lol

      1. Yes! I just got into making infinity scarves with my fingers as knitting tools lol! It’s fun lol

      2. With super bulky yarn, Ashley? I haven’t tried one of those yet. I’m knitting a baby set for a friend that is due is December right now. But I love knitting socks the most.

      3. I use a 6 in yarn but it’s not super bulky I wish I could show you a picture of what I’m talking about 😁

  41. Haaaaaaaaappy Birthday to you! I hope you have a fantastical day!

My favorite things this year are

    1. My bestest friend finally married a man she’s been in love with four 20 years. They reconnected 5 years ago and married on my birthday. (I got to be Matron of Honor too)
    2. When my hubby told me he’s not re-enlisting and we get to go back home to Alaska.

  42. Happy Birthday! I hope you have a FANTABULOUS Day!

The best thing that has happened to me this year was quitting my job back in March & getting out of a bad situation. Being blessed that I haven’t worked since because it has given me the opportunity to help out family members, getting back into cooking/baking for others & creating new recipes; as well as reading all the amazing books out there.

I just wanted to share. I already own all of the books (some of my favs too) so please don’t count me in the giveaway.

Again happy birthday & have a FANTABULOUS day!

      1. I thought of that, but I can’t think of anyone I know who would actually read them who hasn’t already. I will gladly allow someone else have them. 😀

  43. Happy birthday to you!!! Thank yoi for thinking of us on your day. My favorite thing of 2015 has been moving back to the great state of Alaska. 🙂

  44. Happy birthday! I hope it is filled with love and chocolate.

    Have a wonderful year!

    Diana

  45. My favorite thing so far this year has been each and every morning. I had a two close relatives pass last year unexpectedly and it made me realize how precious life is. So every morning that I open my eyes and see my husband and my beautiful children; that is my favorite thing.

  46. Happy Birthday! My Favorite things from 2015 1 discovering your books and the devouring them with a really nice glass of red wine and some very good very dark chocolate. Getting up each morning and wondering what the day will bring.

  47. Happy birthday 🎉🎉

  48. Happy Birthday!!
My favorite thing of 2015 would have to be our new daughter, Cecelia Jane, born June 19th 🙂

  49. Hope you are having a blessed and wonderful birthday, this box full of goodies is AMAZING!

The past few months have been heart wrenching and difficult to say the least. My entire family has had to endure the pain of losing my 16 year old niece, my father suffered a massive stroke and will have to remain in a long term care facility, and the loss of an uncle as well.

So to find something positive about 2015, is difficult at best. However, through all this heartbreak, I have always found comfort in your stories … finding YOU, as an amazing author and storyteller was my “happy place”.

Thank you for your gifts!! Please keep them coming. ♡ HUGS ♡

    1. Entry #68 – I’m so sorry, Melissa. That is a lot for one year, that’s a lot for five years!! I’m glad I can offer you a tiny bit of a reprieve. Lots of love and light!

  50. Happy Birthday, Meghan! What a wonderful box of goodies. If you like Patricia Briggs, you might like the Written in Red series by Anne Bishop? Can you still read others’ books without your writer self taking over and getting analytical? I only write math lessons, so fiction is still completely fun for me. My favorite thing in 2015 was that we got to be together with both grown children for a vacation. I feel blessed that they take time out of their busy lives to go places with us. Looking forward to your next book!

    1. Entry #70 – okay, just looked up Written in Red. I hadn’t heard of it so I just grabbed the sample pages – thank you! I usually know within a couple of pages if I’m just going to be able to read a book. It has nothing to do with ‘good’ or ‘bad’ writing just the story and whether or not it draws me in. But I’m being more brutal lately. If I don’t absolutely love the sample pages I don’t buy the book. My reading time is precious to me, because I generally only read in-between writing books. And I pretty much write books full time, so I have to take time off to read. It’s a vicious circle.

  51. Happy Birthday!!!!!

My favorite thing so far this year was last weekend, which I spent with my husband celebrating our third wedding anniversary! Aside from the rarity of having 3 full days to spend together, we ate a lot of delicious food and chocolate (of course).

  52. Happy Birthday to you!!! My favorite thing is answered prayer daughter got a job (a good one to boot). Single mom with 2 kids and was rough for first 7 months but all is well 🙂

  53. My favorite things if 2015 have been growth in my job, becoming better at work/life balance, and reconnecting with family at a summer wedding in Alaska!!
    Happy Birthday!!

  54. Honestly the best thing about 2015 is and was losing my job,I know we are on a much tighter budget but I get to be a stay at home Mommy! I’ve always wanted to be! Happy Birthday Megan, 💞🎉🎁🎂😊

  55. I was laid off from a job I’d had for ten years–most miserable job ever. After looking for two months, I got hired at a WONDERFUL company that I am planning on staying at for the rest of my life. The benefits are worth it and my fellow employees and bosses are AWESOME!!

  56. Happy Birthday!!! I can’t wait for the next Dowser book to come out!! My favorite thing from 2015 is how well my boys are doing in school!! Last year was really rough for them and so far they’re doing amazing!!

It’s been so long since ice taken the time for myself and as luck would have it I feel in love with your Dowser series and the Oracle! You’re the only writer I’ve ever followed on any social media or pre ordered books…..and in the past I have read a tremendous amount of books!!

    1. Entry #83 – I’m glad you took some time for yourself this year!! 😀 The entire social media landscape has deficiently changed. Even in just the last two years. I LOVE preordering books now, but never thought to do so in the past. Glad I’m on your favs list.!!

  66. I started keeping chickens in 2015 and I’m having so much fun with them. So my favorite thing from 2015 is a chicken lol. Happy birthday and I hope the next year you see more success and happiness than ever before.

    1. Entry #89 – I started keeping chickens in the end of 2014!! They started laying this spring and I added two more as well. I have 2 Black Coppers Marans, 2 Splash (BLRW) Wyandottes, 1 Swedish Flower Hen, and one Wheaten Amerucana.

  67. Happy Birthday!!! I hope you have a fabulous day!!! I have to say the best reading news for me was that I discovered you! I also have been traveling with my family, which I love. Thank you for all the wonderful reading!

All net proceeds went to the Springfield Ce Center. Our group The Guild of Extraordinary Gentlwomen did a couple of teas proceeds of which went to the Community Center as well.

  70. Well besides dowser#5 😜 my favorite chocolate bar discovery is the spicy coconut milk one (which brand I will post in a reply to this cuz I can’t remember right now 😣) but the small chocolates from Italy that I got in NYC were really good too, melt in your mouth and one had pistachios 😄
& on a personal note I was a bridesmaid in (one of)my best friends wedding a couple weeks ago tho I was super sick with a sore throat and congestion but it was larping themed so I had a handmade renaissance dress & everything was fun & nerdy 😜 I made the favors which I had to pour chocolate into molds to get characters to add on top of red cherry nerds & black candy coated chocolate Sixlets. Forgot to send u the pic lol.

October birthday awesome if u love Halloween lol. My boyfriends bday was the 7th but he isn’t as into the holiday as me, I’ve got my zombie earrings in for work and he’s like Ahhh they look like voodoo dolls 😑

  71. Happy birthday!

2015 has been an awesome year so far. I don’t know that I have a favorite thing. Maybe all the great family time we’ve had recently.

  72. Happy Birthday 🙂 my fav. thing has probably been the discovery of your books and finding an awesome lil coffee hut near my sister’s house in FL that makes any kind of coffee/tea you want and serves pumpkin and peppermint all year…. Pumpkin toffee dark chocolate mocha 🙂

One of the best things for me this year is learning the art of tidying (thx to Marie Kondo) and reducing my possessions to that which I truly love……which includes your books!
Thanks for writing such great characters and their adventures 😊

    1. Entry #104 – I did that too, Lynn! I did my wardrobe first, then the rest of the house in preparation to move. There is still more to be done, but I’m pretty happy I’ve done it!

  78. My favorite things this year has been getting engaged!!! And discovering your Dowser series 🙂 happy birthday to you!!!!!!
