Adept Universe Bible: the Twins in progress

I thought it might be fun for you to get a glimpse of the process that Memo goes through when she is working up a character for the Adept Universe bible. After we chat about the particulars (description, characteristics, etc), Memo works up a preliminary sketch. Then she sends it to me for feedback.

This is Peggy and Gabby in ‘progress.’

The twins appear in the third Dowser trilogy as well as Misfits 1. They will both eventually ‘headline’ their own books in the Misfits of the Adept Universe seres.

Adept Universe Bible: Mory’s sketches

Morana “Mory” Novak: Necromancer. Soul seer. Junior specialist for the witches’ Convocation. The wielder’s necromancer. Purple hair, naturally ash brown. With shades of blue in Dowser 7. In Oracle 3, it was sunset-dyed. In Misfits 1, her hair is a deep purple streaked with pink and light blue. Large dark brown eyes, round cheeks, short and petite. “Pixie-like.” Brother: Rusty (d). Mother: Danica. Father was a witch, descended from the founding members of the Godfrey coven, who died before she was born. DOB: February 8, 1998. 15 years old in Dowser 2, 19 in Dowser 7, 21 in Misfits 1. Obsessed with knitting. Lives in a weathered cream-colored Georgian manor in Shaughnessy, with a laurel hedge, wrought iron fence, marble entrance way, massive library, and eight bedrooms. Empty pool, and an overgrown yard. Apprenticed to Pearl, head of the Convocation. Graduated the Academy in 2019. Best friends with Burgundy, witch. According to Jade, her magic tastes like toasted marshmallows with a candied violet undertone. Objects of power: a heavy linked silver chain and thinner flat-linked gold chain, with a jade stone in a cage made from gold bangles, made by Jade, and modified into a coin-ladened necklace by Dowser 7. Dead red-eared slider named Ed, animated with Mory’s power and further enhanced when Jade bled all over him in Dowser 9. Knitting needles that amplify her own ability to wield soul magic.

Mory first appeared in Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic (Dowser 2) as well as the other books in the Dowser series. She narrates the first novella in Graveyards, Visions, and Other Things that Byte (Dowser 8.5), and is the main character in Misplaced Souls (Misfits 1).

Adept Universe Bible: Burgundy’s sketches

Burgundy Dalton: witch. Aka Amy (in Dowser 2). Mory’s friend. A quarter witch, through her maternal grandmother. Changed her name when she started studying magic with Pearl and Scarlett, revealing a talent for healing. Wavy light brown hair (with blue streaks in Dowser 7). Curvy and cute. Hazel eyes. Likes the color yellow. Studying medicine at UBC. Keeps her premade spells and charms in a wooden box, mostly for healing but also for calming, etc. According to Jade (the dowser), her magic tastes like sweet watermelon. Drives an older Honda Civic. Lives in the Dunbar area. DOB August 30, 1997 (Virgo). 20 in Dowser 7. 22 in Misfits 1. Objects of Power: a focus/amplification stone – a smooth rock about the size of her palm, taken from her property to help focus her magic. A runed grounding is carved into the stone – the symbol for earth combined with a healing rune passed down from her grandmother. The focal stone was strengthened by Jade in Dowser 9, turning it into an amplification stone. Warm to the touch.

Burgundy (as Amy) is first mentioned in Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic (Dowser 2). She then appears in the third Dowser trilogy, including Dowser 8.5. She also makes an appearance in Misplaced Souls (Misfits 1).

Burgundy. Witch. Always eager to learn, to be included. Generous. An introvert at heart, she once stood up to a pissed off shapeshifter (Beau), then asked a demi-God (Qiuniu) if he needed any help. Sketch by Memo.
Burgundy. Witch. With her focal/amplification stone, a powerful artifact created by Jade, the dowser. Apprentice to Scarlett and Pearl, she is also studying mundane medicine. Has helped her best friend, Mory, necromancer, out of multiple messes though technically she is the least powerful among the misfits. Sketch by Memo.

Adept Universe Bible: Pearl’s sketches

Pearl Godfrey: Witch. Chair of the witches’ Convocation. Head of the Godfrey coven. Grandmother of Jade, dowser. Mother of Scarlett, witch. Widow. Tiny, with a long silver braid. Often twisted into an intricate bun. 60 in Dowser 1. Surfer. Knitter. Favours grey wool pants and silk blouses, often paired with a lace shawl. Lives in a beachfront mansion off Point Grey Road with a wrought iron gate, white shutters, and a white marble entryway. Also an outdoor pool and a guest bathroom that is wallpapered to make it feel like standing inside a birthday present (see Dowser 7). Navy blue Lexus. She runs Godfrey Properties and owns numerous properties in and around Vancouver and Whistler. Including the buildings that Jade leases for her bakeries, Cake in a Cup and Cake in a Cup Too, as well as the Talbot’s residence and Kett’s penthouse. According to Jade, her magic tastes like lilac with a base of fresh-cut grass. Objects of power: a wooden spear, stolen by Sienna in Dowser 3. A necklace with silver charm-bracelet charms crafted by Jade, and an extensive library of spellbooks.

Pearl first appeared in Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic as well as the other books in the Dowser series. She makes appearances in Oracle 3, Reconstructionist 1, and Misfits 1.

Pearl. Witch. Head of the witches’ Convocation. Unflappable, even when faced by epically powerful beings of myth and legend. Maker of shortbread, knitter of lace. Wielder of blue lighting strikes of power. Sketch by Memo.
Pearl. Witch. Keeping track of, and occasionally training, the misfits that have practically taken over her coven is a full-time job, but Pearl manages with nary a hair out of place. Just … don’t get on her bad side … Sketch by Memo.

Adept Universe bible: Scarlett’s sketches

Scarlett Godfrey: Witch. Occupies one of the thirteen seats on the witches’ Convocation. Charm and charisma are focal points for her magic, but she’s also skilled with healing salves and barrier spells. Petite. Long strawberry blonde hair. Indigo blue eyes. Creamy skin. 44 in Dowser 7. Beautiful, and sexy. Mother of Jade Godfrey (the Dowser). Daughter of Pearl Godfrey (Head of the Godfrey Coven). Scarlett went ‘traveling’ at the age of 16, returning from Australia pregnant with Jade and with no way to contact the father. Her relationship with her mother is perpetually strained for a multitude of reasons, including the fact that Pearl insisted she was incapable of raising her own daughter.

According to Jade, her magic tastes predominately like strawberries with hints of lilac and white chocolate, and a base of fresh-cut grass. She returned to Vancouver between Dowser 1 and Dowser 2, purchasing and renovating a house on West Fifth Avenue and Stephens, then selling two of the three suites of the triplex. She reunited with Jade’s father, Yazi, after Dowser 3 but their relationship status hasn’t been formalized. Objects of power: a rapier with a large blue stone, gifted to her by Chi Wen, the Far Seer of the Guardian Nine.

Scarlett first appeared in Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic as well as the other books in the Dowser series. She makes cameo appearances in Oracle 3 and Misfits 1.

Scarlett. Witch. Favours silk dresses, open-toed shoes, and dancing nude under the full moon. Keeps a demi-god as a lover. Sketch by Memo.

Adept Universe Bible: Kett’s sketches

Kettil “Kett”: vampire. Elder and Executioner of the Conclave. Grand Conclave investigator. Aka he hunts down rogue vampires and ‘disposes’ of them, no questions asked. Ability to absorb the powers of other Adepts by drinking their blood. Ice blue eyes (occasionally referred to as silver). White blond hair, usually worn short. Broad forehead. Lanky frame. 5’11. Had (witch) powers before he was turned. His magic tastes like cool peppermint and appears red. Drives a white BMW SUV. 1200+ years old. Second son of witch family, bred to be a sacrifice to his grandsire, Ve, who was playing at being a God at the time. Sire is Estelle, who killed him out of jealously and then was forced to remake him as punishment. Ve’s shiver is based out of London, England but Kett is currently leasing a 5000 sq ft penthouse that overlooks False Creek in Vancouver, BC, formerly owned by Rochelle Saintpaul (Oracle), now owned by Pearl Godfrey (Head of the Godfrey Coven). Maker and master of Jasmine Fairchild, mentor (and now master) of Benjamin Garrick. Objects of power: Invisible satchel. As well as a collection of centuries of untold treasures, including the fountain pen he gave to Benjamin Garrick.

Kett first appeared in Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic as well as every other book in the Dowser series. He’s a main character in the Reconstructionist trilogy, starting with Catching Echoes, and makes an appearance in Misfits 1.

Kett. Vampire. In smooth, cool predator mode. Favours dark washed jeans, cashmere sweaters, and ridiculously expensive Italian leather dress shoes. A collector of rarities, usually in the form of living, breathing, uber-powerful people, like Jade Godfrey and Kandy Tate. Sketch by Memo.
Kett. Vampire. Lord of the micro-expression. A raised eyebrow is reserved for the acknowledgment and disapproval of extreme idiocy. Or he’s anticipating draining someone dry. Possibly both at the same time. Actual smiles are reserved for charming those few people he can’t just outright beguile, or possibly to indicate delight over some certain-to-end-in-blood endeavor. Sketch by Memo.

Adept Universe Bible: Kandy’s Sketches

Kandice “Kandy” Tate: werewolf. Aka the enforcer of the North West Coast American pack, aka the wielder’s wolf. Lithe, muscular. Short green hair, briefly dyed purple in Dowser 3 by Lara, and permanently dyed pink in Dowser 9. Natural hair colour is brown. Lives in the apartment next to Jade. Wolf is gray. Likes horror and teen sex comedy movies. Magic tastes like red berry dark chocolate with a bitter aftertaste, grassy green base in colour. The cupcakes, Flirt in a Cup, Tart in a Cup, Sass in a Cup, and Tease in a Cup were created by Jade to match her magic. Generally prefers to cavort with females, human or otherwise, but only male werewolves. Birthday is August 8 – turned 26 just before Dowser 4. Physiotherapist. Mother was named Kandice as well. Objects of power: Two rune-and-diamond crusted, three-inch gold wrist cuffs that lend her extra strength and repel malicious magic. The cuffs were gift from Chi Wen, the far seer, in Dowser 4 and have been continually fortified by Jade Godfrey, the dowser, since. Dubbed the Herakles cuffs by Haoxin in Dowser 7. But renamed as the Wolf’s Bracers in Benjamin Garrick’s chronicles.

Kandy first appeared in Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic as well as every other book in the Dowser series. She’s also appeared in Oracle 2 and Misfits 1.

The cuff is removed in Misfits 1. Objects of power: A gold fountain pen (a gift from his mentor, Kett) turned into a magical lockpick by Jade Godfrey, dowser.

Benjamin first appeared in Reconstructionist 1. He also appeared in Dowser 7,  Dowser 8Dowser 8.5, and Dowser 9. He is a main character in Misfits 1.

Benjamin Garrick. Vampire. Sketch by Memo. Author note: I’m not certain it is possible to love this rendering of Ben more than I do. It’s absolutely perfect. Right before Ben tries to beguile you with a simple smile, then drink you down, of course.
Benjamin Garrick. Vampire. Only half paying attention while obsessing about recording the chronicles of the Adept. Sketch by Memo.

Jade. Action-mode engaged! Wielding the dragon slayer aka the elf slayer – a katana capable of absorbing magic. At Jade’s behest, of course and always.
