Bake a cupcake and win five paperbacks

CONTEST CLOSED! Winner: CORI from NEW YORK, USA. Lucky #4

I still have a few of those misprinted paperbacks hanging around in a box in my office. It’s a handy box, because it raises my laptop up when I’m working from the treadmill desk, but it isn’t very pretty. I should replace it with something in the nearish future, so the books need to go! Plus it feels like a long time since I’ve hosted a giveaway.

This is the final full set of misprints. The books are slightly streaked with pink lines. The files/printings have all been corrected, so once these are gone there won’t be any more. I’d be happy to sign them, personalized or not.

IMG_0372Do you want to win all FIVE of these paperbacks?

Yes?

Then, to enter:

1. Bake some cupcakes inspired by one of the cupcake creations in the Dowser books. You can use one of my recipes or your own – from scratch or a mix, your choice.

2. Take a picture of your cupcake(s) and post that picture in the comments as a .jpg (if possible).

Unfortunately, there isn’t mechanism that allows you to post a picture directly in the comments, but you can link a .jpg. The comment thread should embed it automatically — direct links to the .jpg are best for this. If this isn’t possible for you then you can link to a post on Instagram/Flickr/Facebook/Twitter/etc. This will just show up as the link, not the picture though.

3.  Tell me about your cupcake. Which Dowser cupcake inspired yours – Lust in a Cup, Sunshine in a Cup, Buzz in a Cup, etc?

This is not a baking or beauty contest. Even with how much I bake I cannot manage bake/frost a ‘pretty’ cupcake.

FUN! FUN!

Notes/Rules: OPEN INTERNATIONALLY. Each cupcake/picture will be assigned an entry number. The winning entry will then be selected via random number generator. One entry per person. Please make sure to fill out a valid email address in the comment form. Email addresses are not collected for any purpose other than notifying the contest winner.

If you haven’t commented on the blog before, or you comment from a different IP address, the comments are moderated. So don’t worry if you don’t see your entry right away. I will approve it, then assign it an entry number.

Contest closes SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 2015 at 8 p.m. PDT.

Misprint giveaway #5 – last but not least!

GIVEAWAY CLOSED. WINNER AMANDA FROM OKLAHOMA, LUCKY #7

To recap a fourth time. I had fifteen misprinted paperbacks. The covers of the paperbacks were all oddly tinted to various degrees with pink and red. And, in a few, the top and bottom margins shift down or up around the halfway point. Since I’m a fan of decluttering, I thought I should give these ‘rarities’ away.

Writer Wednesday: Scott Fitzgerald Gray (Giveaway)

GIVEAWAY CLOSED. WINNER JANINE from KANSAS!

If you pay close enough attention to the acknowledgments at the back of my novels, or my rantings on Facebook and Twitter, you will recognize Scott Fitzgerald Gray‘s name. He is my editor. He has edited every single screenplay I deemed worthy of rewriting from the early-2000s through to every single novel or short or novella I’ve published.

That’s a a lot of editing. I imagine SFG now knows me via my writing almost as well as Michael does. So when I met him face-to-face for the first time last Saturday, I was really excited/anxious.

We had brunch. I made my Chewy Gooey Chocolate Cookies. But best of all – and the main point of this blog post – is that Scott brought me signed paperbacks. Yes, he is a writer as well as an editor. I’d be a little lost without him, so hopefully he never stops editing but I greedily snatch up every book he writes and beg him for more as well.

So without further ado, Scott left these two insanely pretty, autographed paperbacks for a blog giveaway! Yes! Thanks SFG!

Autographed paperbacks generously offered for giveaway on MBM!
Autographed paperbacks generously offered by SFG for giveaway on Made By Meghan!

I read Sidnye (Queen of the Universe) and LOVED it. (Here’s my review). SFG is meticulous with his plotting and he makes you work as a reader, but his stories pay off big time! Book Two is awaiting me on my Kindle app.

Synopsis of Book One:  Life is complicated enough when you live full-time at boarding school because your parents are dead, and when the other students around you are mostly idiots, and when you’re doomed to spend the rest of your existence in cafeteria detention because you just can’t stop annoying the people in charge of your life. But that’s when you discover the headaches you’ve been having aren’t just a part of being thirteen and feeling the weight of the world hammering down on you.  That’s when you realize the dreams you’ve been having are more than dreams, and the people you thought you were closest to are less concerned with caring about you than with keeping you from knowing the things they don’t want you to know…

Intrigued?!!

Interesting in winning these two gorgeous paperbacks?

Comment below to enter: “Gimmie some SFG!” Or some such. 😀

Easy peasy, though make sure to include your email address in the comment form.

SFG author photo

Scott Fitzgerald Gray is a specially constructed biogenetic simulacrum built around an array of experimental consciousness-sharing techniques — a product of the finest minds of Canadian science until the grant money ran out. Accidentally set loose during an unauthorized midnight rave at the lab, the S.F. Gray entity is currently at large amongst an unsuspecting populace, where his work as an author, screenwriter, editor, RPG designer, and story editor for feature film keeps him off the streets.

More info on Scott and his work (some of it even occasionally truthful) can be found by reading between the lines at insaneangel.com.

A reconfigured office and a giveaway

GIVEAWAY CLOSED – MISSY FROM NEW ENGLAND IS THE WINNER THIS WEEK! YAY!

So I’ve been spoiled this week. I treated myself to a walking treadmill for my standing desk, then Michael decided that he was going to repaint my office along with reconfiguring my desks.

We just threw the office together when we moved here in September to get it as function as possible as quickly as possible so I could get Oracle 1 published.

Now when I complain about my ‘writing cave’ I will actually be joking.

New paint, new treadmill, and new reconfiguration.
New paint, new treadmill, and new reconfiguration.

The paint colour is the ever classy ‘cloud white.’ I still need to hide all the wires, but I spent two hours on the treadmill today and actually hand wrote 2k of Dowser 5 this afternoon while walking! And, not to worry, I have another regular desk underneath the window on the opposite wall for when my feet get tired. 🙂

While we were pulling everything out of the office I unearthed a box of misprinted paperbacks.

Remember these?

And, since I’m a fan of decluttering, I thought I should give some of these ‘rarities’ away.

To that end, for the next five Fridays, there will be a giveaway here on the blog. I’ll start with two full sets of Dowser 1 – 3 and Oracle 1, then three Dowser 1s, then three Oracle 1s, and finally one lone Dowser 3.

The covers of the paperbacks are all oddly tinted to various degrees with pink and red. And, in a few, the top and bottom margins shift down or up around the halfway point.

I’ll autograph and label the books as misprints. I might even throw in an I See Me postcard and some butterfly tattoos.

Shall we begin?

RIP Terry Pratchett and Wintersmith

I’m exceedingly sad to hear of Sir Terry Pratchett’s passing today.

I could rant about the cruelty of Alzheimer’s, to which I lost my step-mother last year, but I’m not going to.

I could also go on and on about what I loved about Sir Terry’s books – I’ve selectively read every one he ever wrote about witches – but I won’t.

What I want to do to celebrate a fantastic fantasy writer is to pass his work on, hopefully to someone who’s never read a book by him before.

My introduction – years ago via a blog mention from an old friend, Darren – was Wintersmith. And I think it still might be my favourite book of Sir Terry’s, though I just bought Good Omens and hope to start reading it tonight. Wintersmith is technically the third book in his young adult series, but it was a perfect entry point for me and I hope it will be for one of you as well.Wintersmith kindle cover

To celebrate his life and his work, I want to buy this book for one of you – for kindle, or iBooks, or Kobo, or B&N, or in paperback. You name the format and I’ll buy it.

Comment below with your favourite book of Sir Terry’s or why you’d like to read Wintersmith specifically to enter.

I’ll assign each comment a number, run a random number generator, and select a winner at 5 p.m. PST on March 12, 2015 (today). Open internationally for ebooks. Canada and USA for ebooks or paperback. Remember to fill out your email address in the blog comment.

ETA: 5:20pm – GIVEAWAY CLOSED. WINNER to be contacted shortly.

RIP Sir Terry Pratchett. Thank you for the entertainment, the inspiration, and for the strong women and fantastic world you created.
