Misprint paperback giveaway #2

GIVEAWAY CLOSED. WINNER: WENDY FROM ALASKA!

To recap. I have fifteen misprinted paperbacks. The covers of the paperbacks are all oddly tinted to various degrees with pink and red. And, in a few, the top and bottom margins shift down or up around the halfway point. Since I’m a fan of decluttering, I thought I should give some of these ‘rarities’ away.

I gave the first four way last week.

I’ll autograph and label the books as misprints. I’ll even throw in an I See Me postcard and some butterfly tattoos.

A reconfigured office and a giveaway

GIVEAWAY CLOSED – MISSY FROM NEW ENGLAND IS THE WINNER THIS WEEK! YAY!

So I’ve been spoiled this week. I treated myself to a walking treadmill for my standing desk, then Michael decided that he was going to repaint my office along with reconfiguring my desks.

We just threw the office together when we moved here in September to get it as function as possible as quickly as possible so I could get Oracle 1 published.

Now when I complain about my ‘writing cave’ I will actually be joking.

New paint, new treadmill, and new reconfiguration.
New paint, new treadmill, and new reconfiguration.

The paint colour is the ever classy ‘cloud white.’ I still need to hide all the wires, but I spent two hours on the treadmill today and actually hand wrote 2k of Dowser 5 this afternoon while walking! And, not to worry, I have another regular desk underneath the window on the opposite wall for when my feet get tired. 🙂

While we were pulling everything out of the office I unearthed a box of misprinted paperbacks.

And, since I’m a fan of decluttering, I thought I should give some of these ‘rarities’ away.

To that end, for the next five Fridays, there will be a giveaway here on the blog. I’ll start with two full sets of Dowser 1 – 3 and Oracle 1, then three Dowser 1s, then three Oracle 1s, and finally one lone Dowser 3.

The covers of the paperbacks are all oddly tinted to various degrees with pink and red. And, in a few, the top and bottom margins shift down or up around the halfway point.

I’ll autograph and label the books as misprints. I might even throw in an I See Me postcard and some butterfly tattoos.

Shall we begin?

RIP Terry Pratchett and Wintersmith

I’m exceedingly sad to hear of Sir Terry Pratchett’s passing today.

I could rant about the cruelty of Alzheimer’s, to which I lost my step-mother last year, but I’m not going to.

I could also go on and on about what I loved about Sir Terry’s books – I’ve selectively read every one he ever wrote about witches – but I won’t.

What I want to do to celebrate a fantastic fantasy writer is to pass his work on, hopefully to someone who’s never read a book by him before.

My introduction – years ago via a blog mention from an old friend, Darren – was Wintersmith. And I think it still might be my favourite book of Sir Terry’s, though I just bought Good Omens and hope to start reading it tonight. Wintersmith is technically the third book in his young adult series, but it was a perfect entry point for me and I hope it will be for one of you as well.Wintersmith kindle cover

To celebrate his life and his work, I want to buy this book for one of you – for kindle, or iBooks, or Kobo, or B&N, or in paperback. You name the format and I’ll buy it.

Comment below with your favourite book of Sir Terry’s or why you’d like to read Wintersmith specifically to enter.

I’ll assign each comment a number, run a random number generator, and select a winner at 5 p.m. PST on March 12, 2015 (today). Open internationally for ebooks. Canada and USA for ebooks or paperback. Remember to fill out your email address in the blog comment.

ETA: 5:20pm – GIVEAWAY CLOSED. WINNER to be contacted shortly.

RIP Sir Terry Pratchett. Thank you for the entertainment, the inspiration, and for the strong women and fantastic world you created.

Breathing the moment – Jan 8, 2015

This morning, despite the looming deadlines I’m attempting to tame with schedules and to-do lists, Michael and I took a moment to let the chicks wander out of the run and into the barren, fog enshrouded garden. And each time I started to say that I needed to go back to work I took a breath instead of speaking. This lasted for maybe ten minutes, but probably more like five.

Then we returned to the house, drank our smoothies, and chatted about our schedules for the day.

Now I’m cozy in my office with my writing buddy Parker spread out on the desk to the right of me. I can just barely hear Michael playing guitar, and singing quietly, while he writes a new song downstairs in the dining room. And, after I cross a few things off the to-do list, I’m going to fill the afternoon with words scribbled on paper … just as they occur to me.

This is this moment.

I breathe. I type. I sip my hot chocolate.

Tomorrow will be completely different in a hundred almost imperceptible ways.

It’s a lovely life.

Thank you for being apart of it.

Kelly’s box of chocolate

I have been exceedingly blessed in the last few years by lovely readers who have become supportive friends, some of whom I haven’t even met in person yet. I’ve talked about Gertie and her cupcake support committee herehere, and here (one for each Dowser book). I also still have Karen’s trinket hanging on my monitor where I get to see it every morning.

And then there is lovely Kelly. She sent this:

<3 I’ve made a screensaver out of the above image <3

I knew a treat was coming, because Kelly and I had been trying to meet for a hot chocolate last month – yes, we know each other in real life, however our paths do not naturally cross 🙁 But life was insanely busy with moving and family. Kelly finally convinced me that she should just mail the package to me as a house warming gift.

This is what was so brilliantly packaged inside – yes, brand new chocolate!!!

unwrapped box for blog

Five freaking kilograms of Ocoa by Cacao Barry to be exact!! That’s 11.02 pounds for my American friends. I, of course, immediately opened, poured, and tasted 🙂

This huge box of “support” will get me through writing a couple of more Dowser books, at the very least. I’m thinking of making brownies, cupcakes, and perhaps some Chewy Gooey Chocolate Cookies with it.

In fact, I’m designing up some new cupcakes for Dowser 4 and I’m seriously thinking of using this chocolate to make them, then sending tasters to Kelly for her approval. That won’t even dent this box of goodness – yes, I’m greedy and selfishly-bent when it comes to good chocolate.

Thank you Kelly, for all your support and the chocolate. It is – you are – very appreciated and cherished!

Gertie’s Cupcakes – part 3

When I released Dowser #1 in June 2013, I was completely blown away by a few readers who emailed to tell me that they’d felt compelled to bake cupcakes while reading the book. I’ve previously blogged about Michelle’s and Gertie’s – book 1 and Gertie’s – book 2.

Since then, Gertie has taken it upon herself to form the ‘Cupcake Support Committee’. It’s a thankless job, but she is obviously seriously devoted ;)!!!

Here is her contribution for Dowser 3 (posted on Flickr). They look insanely good, as all of Gertie’s cupcakes do. She puts my icing efforts to shame.

Happy Cupcake Day!

Thanks for sharing Gertie!

If you bake while reading the Dowser Series I would love to know about it!!

A trinket aka bookmark from Karen

I just went out to grab the mail and found this waiting for me:

WORDS bookmarkIt’s a trinket from Karen – who also made this bookmark – made specifically for me!! So fun! So sparkly! Can you tell that Karen is a fan of Jade and the Dowser Series (& me, YAY!)?

bookmark close upClever, clever. How many references to the Dowser Series can you find/see here? Some might be more subtle than you think … like the flip-flops.

Karen – I just adore this – thank you so much!! I have it hanging on my computer monitor right now. It will keep me company while I write Dowser#3.
