Dowser 5: Baxia aka the Rain Bringer

I pulled this excerpt while putting together Baxia’s bio for the Adept Universe bible, love the tension between Pulou and Baxia. With Jade and Warner caught in the middle, of course.

The door to Southern Africa blew open with a blast of heat and rain that hit us like a hurricane.

I stumbled to keep my footing. Warner just leaned into the onslaught. Had I been questioned about it two seconds before, I would have sworn that weather couldn’t travel through the portals or enter into the nexus.

Baxia stepped through the open portal onto the white marble floor. Her otherwise bare feet were adorned with exceedingly cute golden toe rings and ankle bracelets inlaid with various gems. The storm that had pummeled Warner and me whipped back and around the guardian of Southern Africa. This left us exceeding damp and windblown, whereas Baxia’s bright African-inspired print maxi dress appeared to be bone-dry. Her ebony skin reminded me of the finest dark chocolate from Madagascar. I tamped down on the pure envy that rose as I stood before the powerful and beautiful guardian.

The rain bringer had come to the nexus.

Pulou stepped through the portal after Baxia, his fur coat showing no evidence of him having just walked through a hurricane. The remaining vortex of water and heat snapped back with the magic of the portal as the door closed behind the guardians.

Warner dropped to one knee and I curtsied deeply. I’d never actually spoken directly to the rain bringer. I understood her guardian gifts had something to do with water, or the control of water. Either way, a guardian who was preceded by a hurricane was definitely someone to bow before.

“Alchemist,” Baxia said. Though her accented English was lyrical, my title was spoken with a sharp edge, as if the guardian was unhappy to find me standing before her. “You do not have permission to enter my territory. If something lies between my borders that is deadly to guardians, you will let it sleep.”

Pulou shifted his feet uncomfortably. I peeked up through my curls to see Baxia glaring at the treasure keeper.

“Is that understood?” she asked him. Her guardian magic — an intoxicating blend of too-dark-to-ever-be-sweet chocolate, well-ripened papaya, and a hint of tobacco that lingered long on my palate — momentarily rose to cloak her in a golden aura.

Wind stirred, lifting the unruly curls off my face. The storm threatened to return as the question — or, rather, the declaration of war — hung between the two guardians.

Pulou turned his stoic gaze on my still partially bowed head. Then I figured out the question had actually been directed to me … or at least through Pulou to me, but for me to answer.

“I understand, guardian,” I said. “I would never walk where I wasn’t welcomed.”

“The map doesn’t lead you to Africa?” Pulou asked, sounding as if maybe he was hoping it did. He was cruising for a bruising, as Gran would say.

Yeah, and guardians were supposed to be peacekeepers. “Not that I know of, treasure keeper,” I answered. “We’re here to request passage to San Francisco.”

“The map leads you to North America?” Pulou asked. “A second time? That is surprising.”

“Not the map —”

“No one enters my territory,” Baxia repeated. Then she padded away. Magic glinted off her toe rings in a way that made me itch to add them to my necklace. Yeah, my magical magpie tendency was verging on obsessive-hoarder-disorder territory these days. I deliberately looked away from the guardian’s flashy feet. I really wasn’t interested in turning into Blackwell. The sorcerer was so obsessed with collecting powerful objects and powerful people that he’d allied himself with my blood-frenzied sister and risked the wrath of the West Coast North American Pack — twice. I knew which lines were not to be crossed. At least, I hoped I knew.

Pulou grumbled something that sounded suspiciously like, “Stroppy biddy.”

Dowser 5: A fav excerpt

I was making a quick addition to the Adept Universe Cookbook today – apparently, I forgot to mention WHEN to add the chocolate chips in the peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie recipe (thank you to Bronwyn’s hubby for letting me know) – and I stumbled upon this excerpt from Dowser 5 that made me smile.

I do adore Drake.

“That’s a Vixen in a Cup. Chocolate gingerbread cake with a salted caramel icing.”

“Tell me the tale of this cupcake,” Drake demanded as he dramatically held a newer creation of mine aloft.

I glanced up from the last handwritten page of the journal. “That’s a Vixen in a Cup. Chocolate gingerbread cake with a salted caramel icing.”

“Vixen in a Cup,” Drake whispered as he carefully peeled the paper off the cupcake. Earlier this year, I’d tried to do away with cupcake holders by using silicone cups to bake. But they were fiddly — the moist, delicate cake broke more often than not — and my customers had rebelled at the breaking of tradition. At least the paper cups I used were compostable.

The final line of the journal read: Shailaja has broken with the guardians. She has broken with me.

“Who is Shay-la-ja?” I asked Drake, attempting to sound out the foreign name.

The fledgling, who’d stuffed the entire cupcake in his mouth, could only shrug in response.

“Way to savor.”

Live chat this Friday, August 14th?

Anjanette asked me today if there was a place to have a private discussion of Dowser 5, and I thought we could try a live chat on my Facebook page. With a massive spoiler alert headline, of course. I’d host for an hour, and answer any questions I can. I won’t discuss any unreleased books but you all can feel free to speculate without me. 😀

We narrowed the date down to this Friday, but I’m not sure what time, hence this poll. I’m on the West Coast of North America so I’m flexible.

Majority rules. The poll will be open for twenty-four hours only, so I have time to let everyone know about the chat ahead of time

How fun will this be?

For those of you who can’t make it, I’ll try to figure out a way to post screenshots afterward. And maybe take a few questions ahead of time?

Dowser 5: cupcakes

I’ve had a few requests to post a list of the cupcakes eaten or mentioned in the Dowser books with each new release. So, I thought I would dash off this blog post just in case anyone wanted to bake before – or while – they’re reading Dowser 5 (release date: July 23, 2015).

New Creations (recipes to come):

Vixen in a Cup – chocolate gingerbread cake with a salted caramel icing.

Blitzen in a Cup – a rich but airy chocolate cake that was heavy on the mocha and iced with eggnog buttercream.

Dowser 5: sneak peek

Dowser 5 book cover

Something bit me in the ass.

I shrieked like a toddler deprived of her ice cream cone, whirled around with my jade knife poised to gut the offender, and found myself staring at yet another endless wall of musty old books.

This wasn’t the first time I’d been ambushed in the nexus library — the books were damn ornery — but it had been getting worse since I’d admitted to myself that I was lost.

Yes, I — a dowser of some skill — was lost in a library full of magic. I could taste, but not pinpoint, the spiced magic of the dragonskin map that I’d left at the table I was camped out at doing research today. I just couldn’t seem to follow that taste back through the shelves and the random stacks of books.

Tomes, not books. That was the proper word to use when the book was leather-bound and handwritten in foreign, dead, or runed languages.

The problem — according to Branson — was that the librarian hadn’t been seen in a few centuries. So, organization had crumbled into disarray verging on chaos. Though I had an inkling that the sword master was joking or exaggerating, because there weren’t so many dragons in the world that one could go missing for centuries and have no one looking for him.

I sighed and craned my neck in the opposite direction, seeing only an endless row of dusty, haphazardly piled books. I had purposefully made sure I could see the library entrance from my table so that I wouldn’t get lost. Except now I couldn’t find the entrance or the table.

Something shifted in my peripheral vision and I spun to jab my knife at it.

Nothing was there.

“We’ll see who has the last laugh if I get my hands on you,” I said. “I’m an alchemist, you know!”

Right. Now I was declaring my magical prowess to a bookshelf. It was childish, but I had a lingering suspicion that the books were only disrespectful because I wasn’t a full-blooded dragon.

Dragon prejudice permeated the nexus, and I was the only half-witch walking the halls … or, at least, currently trying to walk the aisles of the library.

I felt as if I’d been trapped in this damn room since September. And maybe I had. Time moved oddly in the nexus — sometimes incredibly slowly, and what would feel like hours of training turned out to only be thirty minutes when I returned to the bakery. And sometimes — say, if there were any guardians around — minutes turned into hours when I walked back through a portal. My study sessions in the library were usually pretty bang-on in real-world time, though.

And I remembered Christmas, so I couldn’t have been stuck here since autumn. It only felt like that because I was getting nothing accomplished but moving the dust around and being a plaything for the books.

Actually, I had accomplished one thing. My outfit rocked. I was wearing the black cashmere and silk sweater dress that my mother, Scarlett, had given me for Christmas. Today I’d paired the midthigh-length sweater with thick black tights and my wine-colored Bondgirl Fluevog boots — a gift from Gran. The sturdy but still stylish boots dressed down the outfit, but I wasn’t stupid enough to wear heels anywhere near the nexus anymore, even on my nontraining days.

I’d left my blond curls loose and reapplied my rosy lip gloss frequently to compensate for the lack of heels.

Yeah, I was hoping to run into Warner.
