Dowser 1: L.E. eBOOK

Hello, my lovelies!

This likely doesn’t apply to many of you, but – as we approach the ‘official’ release of Dowser 9.5 – for anyone who missed out on the Kickstarter limited edition eBook for Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1), I’ve now made a heavily edited* version available to purchase directly from my store.

This is the same Dowser 1 eBook that can be downloaded for free on all retailers, just with art, character/world bible, recipes, etc. Some of that art in the new limited edition was included in the tenth anniversary Dowser 1 Kickstarter version. But it doesn’t include ALL of the extras, or obviously, all of the stretch goals (Dowser 9.5, the three audiobooks, etc) that came with the Kickstarter versions.

PLEASE DOUBLE-CHECK THAT YOU DON’T ALREADY OWN THE KICKSTARTER VERSION BEFORE PURCHASING. THERE IS NOTHING NEW IN THIS VERSION.

If you’ve purchased an audiobook directly from me before (here is the list of currently available audiobooks), purchasing this eBook works exactly the same way. It is delivered by BookFunnel (you click a link or input a code into the app). Then you can transfer the eBook to your preferred reading device (say, if you like to keep all your books in the same place). Please see more info/instructions on the product page.

*Note: all of the Kickstarter limited editions were exclusive to the Kickstarter. i.e. never to be sold elsewhere (not even directly from me). So certain things have been stripped from this version, including the autographed, stamped title page, author’s note, and some of the other extras. The book cover aligns with the current Dowser covers available through all retailers – so the eBooks match in your app/eReader. The interior formatting is completely redesigned. But it does include Memo’s sketches (which can also be downloaded for free under extras and freebies) and Nicole Deal’s illustrations (which weren’t perpetually exclusive to the Kickstarter).

I hope this is clear! This is more for new readers who might want some art and some of the recipes collected together in one book. 😁

Launching MCD’s Adepts discord with a Dowser Series Buddy Read!

As some of you may or may not have seen, my lovely new PA Brittany is swooping in to help take over some of the more online social aspects of my job. And now I will have no excuse but to adhere to my self-imposed social media blackouts in the morning because Brittany WILL KNOW IF I CHEAT. 😂

As a part of building (and maintaining) a core online community, Brittany has decided to launch a dedicated Discord (MCD’s Adepts)* alongside a Dowser Series Buddy read. I’m sharing the invitation here (below) on my blog so you don’t miss out (if you are so inclined to join us) but it will not be hosted here or by me specifically.

If you haven’t met Brittany yet, here is her intro post on Instagram.

Why a Discord? As I’m sure you’ve noticed, social media reach has only worsened over the last few years. Even just recently my Instagram engagement levels have seriously tanked. This is not only frustrating to me but also to readers who are actually interested in seeing posts from me! Hence the Discord. With Discord, you’re the one to log in whenever you like and poke around to read or participate in the topics that interest you. Nothing gets hidden by the social media platform and nothing gets dropped into spam/promo/junk folders.

The MCD’s Adepts discord will be run by Brittany (in conversation with me, of course). I will pop in to chat daily (in the afternoons 😉). If you’d like to be a moderator, please message Brittany (she is @Britt|MCD’sPA) via the discord. I’m not sure she is looking for anyone but she’d be happy to know you are available if she needs you.

Right now Brittany and I are the only ones over there chatting. So please join us! Brittany has set up some specific channels already, and I’m sure she would be happy to set up more if you have requests.

What is Discord? Via Wikipedia: Discord is an instant messaging and social platform, which allows communication through voice calls, video calls, text messaging, and media and files. Communication can be private or take place in virtual communities called “servers”.

Dowser Series Buddy Read!

Brittany hasn’t read the Dowser Series yet! So she thought it would be fun to invite other readers to read along with her. She is spearheading this and there will be ‘share graphics’ and other fun things going on on my socials. But if you would like to really dig in with her and discuss then you can also join MCD’s Adepts* (discord).

I have an idea for an MCD’s Fav Things: Book Club that will also implemented through the discord server (but only once I feel like I have the time to devote to it).

Note: the Discord links expire in seven days, but just let me know if you need a new invitation.

FUN! FUN!

F.A.Q: Dim Sum

An email from Barb that is currently sitting unanswered in my inbox (sorry, Barb!) has prompted this addition to my slowly growing FAQ posts. And yes, if you haven’t yet noticed over on my various social platforms, I freaking adore dim sum. I adore it so much that I wrote it into Artifacts, Dragons, and Other Lethal Magic (Dowser 6). (Click here to read the scene/excerpt).

Vancouver, BC has a number of great dim sum places, and the menus all differ slightly, but here are some of my and Michael’s favs.

MCD’s Dim Sum Must Haves:

  • Steamed prawn dumplings
  • Streamed scallop dumplings (hard to get/find these days?)
  • Pan-fried shrimp and chive or green onion dumplings (some have pork!)
  • Deep fried squid
  • Deep fried garlic shrimp spring rolls
  • Gai Lan (Chinese Broccoli) in garlic (it’s normally served with oyster sauce)
  • Sauce: a touch of soy sauce

Michael’s Dim Sum picks:

  • Sticky Rice Wrap (often with pork, scallop, and shrimp)
  • Pan-fried Taro Root Cake
  • BBQ pork pastry
  • Anything new of the menu that looks tasty (MJH is always will to try everything once).
  • Sauces: mustard and/or hot sauce (add a touch to a dumpling, etc).

Other traditional picks (not necessarily personal favs but options) (Also MCD doesn’t eat pork):

  • Rice rolls (all different kinds. A little ‘starchy’ but MCD will order prawns or scallops)
  • Baked BBQ Pork Buns
  • Pork/shrimp Shu Mai (dumplings)
  • Veggie Dumplings
  • Bean Curd rolls (usually they have pork, but I’ll order if I can find a veggie or seafood option).

What have I missed? What are your go-to dim sum dishes?

To enter, you place the Dowser series t-shirts you want on your Amazon wish list (including size, etc), then drop a link to your wish list in the comments. NonUK or USA residents that enter will ‘win’ logos as the T-shirts don’t ship to other countries. A few readers have mentioned issues with adding size/colour/type of T-shirt to their wishlists. It works for me, so I’m not sure why some readers are having trouble. If you are having issues, simply add the type/size/colour you want to your comment along with your wish list link.

Open USA/UK (logos for other countries). Giving away 10 T-shirts.

I’m looking forward to June 18! I hope you join me to celebrate ten years of all things Dowser Series!

Sunshine & Lollipops,

Speaking of consuming dim sum in Vancouver …

… and how dragons woo their mates …

Dim sum at Sun Sui Wah was always a delight, but it turned into a fifteen-course extravaganza whenever I had a dragon seated beside me.

Specifically, a six-foot-four-inch, broad-shouldered, dark-blond, blue-green-eyed sentinel who had a serious thing for Chinese food.

Impromptu dim sum outings had become almost a weekly ritual for Warner and me over the previous year. We’d tried just about every restaurant in Vancouver, returning to our first choice after we’d decided it was the tastiest.

The linen-swathed table we were currently occupying in the middle of the restaurant was designed to accommodate groups of eight or more. The host never bothered to seat us at any of the smaller tables that ringed the large open room and were designated for parties of two. It hadn’t taken long for us to gain a reputation. It probably helped that Warner ordered in fluent Cantonese. The sentinel was relaxed and jovial when surrounded by good food and large crowds of people.

Even on a Thursday the restaurant was more than half full and noisy. The management had recently installed two massive TV screens, but none of their clientele appeared to pay attention to whatever sports game was playing at any given time.

Thankfully, brunch or lunch was an easy time for me to get away from work, and Sun Sui Wah was open seven days a week. Because even as stable and predictable as my schedule was, Warner had taken over patrolling the territories of Chi Wen, the far seer, working alongside Haoxin and Qiuniu, the guardians of North and South America. Apparently, it was commonplace for the younger dragons to do so — further training and whatnot — but I was suspicious that it might also be my father’s way of keeping Warner and me from getting too cozy. Either way it meant that the sentinel came and went without much warning.

His unpredictability didn’t bother me as much as I would have thought, though. Probably because it was obvious that he made an effort every single time he walked through the portal in the bakery basement.

Of course, it could also be that he had a knack for picking the perfect shade of green or blue whenever he manifested his clothing. Today, he was wearing a deliciously thin-knit kelly-green merino wool sweater that barely encompassed his shoulders and hugged his ribs and abs just enough to make it difficult to not continuously stare at him.

We’d actually set this rendezvous far enough in advance that I also had the option of making a bit of an effort with my appearance. I opted to wear a new long hoodie of gray cashmere over a dark pair of straight-leg Citizens of Humanity jeans, with a black tank top underneath my T-shirt for extra warmth. The jeans showed off my vintage Fluevogs — golden-brown Giulias with their stacked three-inch heel, from the Fluevog Operetta family. My Christmas presents from Gran — a charcoal silk and cashmere hand-knit triangle scarf, a matching set of wrist warmers, and a ribbed, slouchy hat — were all I needed to add to the outfit to make it outdoor ready. So far, the winter had been mild in Vancouver.

“I thought the wolf was coming back after Christmas?” Warner asked as he reached across the table, expertly picking up a prawn dumpling with his slick plastic chopsticks.

“I texted this morning,” I said. “Haven’t heard back.”

I hadn’t seen Kandy for more than a couple of days in a row since I’d left her in Portland. She’dbeen in Mississippi last July with the oracle, Rochelle, and her shifter boyfriend, Beau. Something had gone down there, but aside from grousing about how she’d ‘saved the oracle’s and the kitten’s asses’ she hadn’t given me any details. Though being close-mouthed was typical for the green-haired werewolf, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something had happened in Mississippi that she didn’t want me to know … or that she was trying to figure out a way to tell me.

I just hoped like hell it wasn’t that she’d laid eyes on a sketch of one of Rochelle’s visions and it was freaking her out. You know, something like my death rendered in charcoal.

Still chewing the dumpling, Warner dipped half a shrimp-and-garlic spring roll in the Worcestershire-type sauce that came with the dish. He popped the crunchy roll into his mouth whole, then raised an eyebrow at me.

“Same with Kett,” I said.

Warner grunted. “The vampire is under house arrest.”

“Sorry?”

“You were worried about the vampire. He’s in London. His elder wasn’t too pleased to find me knocking on his door.”

I stared at Warner, mouth hanging open and everything. “You knocked on the door of the big bad of London because I was concerned?”

Warner shrugged. “It’s good to keep them a little shaken up.”

“How shaken?”

Warner grinned wickedly. “Well, he’s going to have to rebuild a tower that was probably seismically substandard anyway.”

“You … destroyed the big bad’s … castle?”

“Destroyed is such a harsh word.”

I started laughing.

“Damn vampire didn’t want to come with me. I had to formally request permission from the fire breather to enter her territory, then the cold bastard didn’t even want to be rescued.”

“Oh my God … you told Suanmi you were rescuing a vampire and she gave you permission?”

“I might have used the term ‘hunting,’ but yes.”

I attempted to stifle my laughter. I was already drawing attention from nearby tables, which was saying a lot in a huge room filled with large groups of boisterous families.

Warner grinned at me. His chopsticks were poised over the gai lan in garlic sauce.

I wiped tears from my face. “What does house arrest mean?”

Warner shrugged again. “Kett isn’t exactly verbose. But apparently, it’s voluntary … or self-imposed. He seemed pissed that he’d have to cover the cost of the repairs, then sneered at the gold I offered.”

“Kettil, the executioner and elder of the Conclave, is difficult to please.”

“I wasn’t trying to please him.” Warner topped up my tiny mug of jasmine green tea, then lifted his gaze to meet mine.

“Thank you,” I whispered. I’d come to adore the blue starburst that edged the green of his irises. Under the right circumstances, flecks of gold appeared in his eyes as well.

He pushed the final prawn-and-chive pan-fried dumpling — my favorite — across the table toward me, touching the back of my hand as he withdrew his arm. The neck of his sweater opened up just enough that I could see a hint of the dragon tattoo across his collarbone.

Yeah, I was doing that staring thing again. Instead of acting embarrassed, I kept eye contact and slowly curled my lips in a smile.

Warner laughed, low and husky and for my ears only. “Later. We have another stop first.”

“Oh?”

“We’re going somewhere else for dessert. It’s a surprise.”

“Well, apparently you just stormed a castle to rescue my vampire BFF who didn’t actually want to be rescued, so I’ll let you have your dessert secret. For now. But don’t push it, sixteenth century.”

Warner laughed, then raised his hand for the bill.

I finally tore my gaze away from him, dipping the prawn-and-chive dumpling in soy sauce. I’d never been so enamored with anyone before, and certainly not for well over a year. Usually, a couple of weeks were all it took to send me packing. My former boyfriends all had habits … deal breakers … and well, just weren’t … enough.

Some days, being around Warner was almost too much. Too consuming. Thankfully, he had his dragon duties, I had the bakery to distract me, and we met somewhere in the middle every few days.

Still, I wondered if there were just some people you couldn’t get out of your system. Not that I was interested in trying.

Dowser Series: Erin Moon narrating Dowser 1

The Tenth Anniversary Dowser Series Kickstarter campaign just rolled over $35k (YAY!!) and in doing so unlocked the third stretch goal aka the second free audiobook (for tiers 2 and up)! To celebrate I wanted to share the video (below) because I’m insanely excited that Erin is lending her voice and talent to the Dowser Series!

First a tiny bit of background. Just in case you didn’t know, I’m getting the Dowser Series audiobook rights back from my publisher over the first six months of 2023. So I need to rerecord those six and finally record the last three (which is part of the reason I’m doing the Kickstarter). I’ve been working with Julie at Whole Story Studio with the Amplifier and Archivist series. When I mentioned the massive project that is the nine dowser audiobooks to Julie, and my concern about finding the perfect narrator, she brought me Erin Moon.

And Erin is freaking perfect for Jade.

Erin is also freaking perfect for me (and us!!) because she drops the best treats in my inbox. For example, below is seven minutes of her recording the first page of Dowser 1 in her booth. Her process is incredibly focused and intense. And her Jade is playful and just … well, I’ll let you see (listen?) for yourself!

Sound on!

Bonus: Erin is sharing other bits of her process and narration over on her TikTok. And, as she just informed me in another tasty inbox tidbit, she is GOING LIVE on TikTok from 12noon-1 PST every day next week (Jan 16 – 20) as she narrates Treasures, Demons, and Other Black Magic (Dowser 3)!! Squee!!!

POLL: Extra character illustrations for the Kickstarter limited edition

Okay! My lovely readers blew past the first stretch goal of my Tenth Anniversary Dowser Series Kickstarter campaign in less than two hours (because you all rock) leaving me scrambling to create graphics and polls I hadn’t thought I’d need right away. (A lovely ‘problem’ to have!). So this poll was originally meant to entice readers toward the first stretch goal, not to simply be a means of selecting the characters that Nicole Deal (who also does the illustrations for the Archivist Series) is going to draw for us, but … here we go!

What characters do you most want to see nestled in the pages (full colour in the eBook, paperback, and hardcover!) of your limited edition tenth anniversary copy of Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1)? [The Jade illustration is already done!]

Pick your top five! And I’ll send that list to Nicole along with descriptions, etc, so she can get started!

Pick your TOP FIVE favourite Dowser Series characters (as they appear in Dowser 1)!

View Results

Remember, the limited editions of Dowser 1 are exclusive to the Kickstarter, click here for more info. The illustrations themselves are exclusive until mid2024.

And! Don’t miss the cupcake poll. Dark Chocolate Raspberry is in the lead, and you all know the disaster that was me baking with blackberries (aka Kandy’s birthday cupcakes) so I’m sure raspberries will be a breeze (😭).

UNLOCKED! Five extra character illustrations to be added to the limited editions of Dowser 1!
