CHAPTER TWO – thoughts/notes/quotes:

Social worker scene – setting up how terribly alone Rochelle is, devoid of true human contact, her orphan status and ‘mental illness’ have segregated her from the world. No matter how strong she wants to be, everyone needs someone …

BTW, the scene with the jeweller is one of Michael’s favourite scenes in the book.

Notes

  • Necklace – broken, tarnished, and with a roughly-hewn antique-white diamond (so slightly darker/cloudier than the one pictured below). A piece of Rochelle’s past surfacing right before she begins her new chapter.

Rochelle's necklace

Favourite Quotes

It was nice that she cared, though. I’d just had more than enough of nice in my life. I wanted more than nice, but didn’t believe that more existed. So I’d take nothing – and no one – on my own terms every day, starting today. Nice just didn’t work for me anymore. – I See Me (Oracle 1), Chapter Two

CHAPTER THREE – thoughts/notes/quotes:

THE BRAVE!! “It was absolutely hideous. I loved every inch of it.”  – Rochelle’s retreat, her ‘coccoon’. [I was going to insert a picture here – but am blogging on my iPad right now. Will come back to do so tomorrow.]

Notes

  • Gary/Tess -N.B. ‘dinner smells’ – make Rochelle’s stomach rumble though food means little to her in other situations.

Favourite Quotes

Keeping my mouth shut was my best defence against life.  – I See Me, Oracle 1, Chapter Three

  1. I agree with Michael….the jewelry store scene is one of my favorites! I’m wondering if the jewelry store was so locked down because of the area it’s located in or if there is another more magical reason yet to be revealed??

My other favorite scene from Chapters 2 and 3 was the exchange with Rochelle and Gary. Seemed to me the first time that Rochelle seemed to not keep up the tough exterior so much and was more at ease and accepting of someone caring about her and her well being. I was glad to see that someone was in a roundabout way trying to lookout for her and give her someone to rely on in a time of need. Again the question came to mind if Gary and Tess are in fact tied to the magical world? I hope they meet again on the coast!!

Maybe I’ve just not gotten to it yet (I’m just starting Chapter 4) but I hope that more of the story of when Rochelle first met Gary and Tess are revealed as well as more of Rochelle’s childhood at the Residence and her parents are/were.

    Chapter 4 here I come!! 🙂

    1. My previous comment seems to have gotten lost 🙁 Jewellery store – locked because of the area (or what the area used to be). Gary and Tess are indeed important to the Rochelle storyline though they do not reappear in Oracle 1 (I’d planned to have them at the end but just didn’t manage to work it in). Not many hints to Rochelle’s childhood (she doesn’t dwell) but some coming up!

  2. I find it interesting that right off the bat in Chapter 2, Rochelle notes Carol as being covered in brown. Being a social worker, Rochelle’s relationship with her is bound to be complicated (though it’s clear that Carol does try to be supportive and whatnot). But then later when we see Gary, all Rochelle notes color wise is his greying hair – when clearly he is a man that she respects (as noted by using his name before any pronouns and her level of comfort around him).

I think it’s also interesting that she notes in ch.3 that she walked out of LotR halfway through because it made her queasy. Perhaps a physical reaction to seeing that much magic in her face (movie or not).

She also mentions getting her white blood cell count checked weekly – having read the Dowser series, I’m curious if it’s just the doctors trying to be nosy in an experimental sort of way, or if it’s to spear-head any side-effects to the meds she’s taking…

    1. Yes, mismatched browns for the social worker … ivory-white cashmere mittens (cherished?) from the previous one. The relationship with Gary is very interesting … I thought we might see him again in Oracle 1 but couldn’t fit the meeting in to the storyline. Look for him and Tess in Oracle 2 🙂 The brave and food are the important connections there (building a relationship unlike any other Rochelle has).

      LotR – bingo 😀

White blood count – it’s a precaution because of the pills. Though you bring up an interesting point – that I’ll explore further in Oracle 2 – human reactions to the world of the Adept. This has been kept under wraps in the Dowser books so far because certain precautions are already in place (the investigating teams the witches Convocation employs, etc). But it will come to more of a head in Oracle 2 and Dowser 7 (perhaps).
