CHAPTER SIX – important beats:

  • APPLE JUICE!
  • Eyes changing colour (magic).
  • Some hints to Beau’s not-so-great BG
  • Rochelle’s art from Beau’s POV. He sees the magic, but doesn’t know how to talk to Rochelle about it.

Favourite Quotes

He’d had the bakery heat up apple juice for me. I shouldn’t read too much into the action. There was no way he could possibly know what apple meant to me, just because I ordered apple pie last night. But still, my throat constricted, and when I tried to hold the emotion at bay, it flooded with a wave of heat through my face and neck. I gasped when the tightness moved to my chest. I couldn’t breathe. Oh, God. I think this was … happiness. Extreme, insane happiness. This didn’t happen in real life.

“It’s okay?” he asked.

“Yes,” I choked out. I looked up from the hot apple juice in my hand to lock my gaze to his. His face was blurry through my unshed tears.

“Don’t kick me out,” he said.

“I won’t.”  – I See Me, Oracle 1, Chapter 6

CHAPTER SEVEN – important beats:

  • Pocket of bliss (including the references to the function of the Brave in Chapter Six “a microcosm of our own design.”) and Rochelle’s disbelief in “true love” or “fate,” which is VERY important later.
  • Hoyt is back. Silver reflection – Rochelle getting some hints here about magic (etc) that she promptly tries to reason away.
  • Beau stays.

Favourite Quotes

I was broken in a way that couldn’t be repaired. I could only endure. I really, really hoped that Beau staying meant he’d endure with me. – I See Me, Oracle 1, Chapter 7

  1. “I always survive. I might as well relish something for the first time in my life.” – It’s important to let yourself be happy, and I feel like it’s a huge step towards living a functional life that she’s allowing this moment to exist.

“I would walk each step as far as it would take me, and not worry – not for one moment – about the unknown beyond.”

“”I have cookies,” Beau said with a casual shrug. “We can go wherever you want, anytime.”” – THE COOKIES. What is up with the cookies?? At this point in the book it’s not a common thing, but I recall later bits where it is. Is it like the equivalent to Jade’s chocolate desires?

“”It’s just that I like the apple juice so much it scares me.”” – I get the whole reference to the Jade scene later in the book that you responded with from the last set of chapters. However, now I’m curious if perhaps there’s a deeper familial connection. I’m big on philosophy and playing devil’s advocate so I’m just throwing things out there because it’s just how my brain works. It’s no mystery that babies are capable of having deep psychological connections to their womb time, especially when there is trauma involved. Within in the magical community, those who come to practice have a higher rate of this phenomenon. So, given that Rochelle was born to a dead mother, and the family bit that Jade brings up herself with the magic tasting similar between parent and child… It’s her small connection to the family that she never had. (Though maybe this is exactly what you meant when you said to reference that scene all along, and I’m just now catching up.)

And also… I want fun happy times like that… 🙂

    1. Hee Hee, I think Beau just likes cookies. And, of course, the Oreos fit with Rochelle B&W ‘leanings.’ Apples: see the reference to necklace not being attuned to Rochelle, and yes, the apple/oracle magic is a connection to her mother (along with the necklace). But this won’t be further explored until Oracle 3 (at best guess right now).

Rochelle does desperately try to live in the present … her past is shitty and her future completely unknown. It’s an important thing to note about her.
